We have information that John Bassett (Jnr) had interest in a Catherine Mine. In 1861 he was not a share holder in the "Catherine Reef United Claimholders Gold Mining Company".

Trying to resolved how many times John came out to Australia before emmigrating
May 1853
It is thought that the these two travelling together on Board the SS Marco Polo were our Bassetts
1. John Bassett, 53
2. John Bassett, 32
Comment: the ages match father and son birth dates of our John Bassett Snr and John his son. See later comments for corroborating evidence.

Jan 1854
John Bassett (Jnr) appears to have travelled alone on the Ship MARCO POLO.
Comment: again the age matches with our John Bassett, it could be that he came out with his father went home and then returned again - a very quick turn around.

15 May 1857
John and his family Travelled together on Board the SS Royal Charter in 1857 and arriving in June 1857. Examination of the records reveals that the following people were travelling together
Party 1
1. William Bassett aged 40 miner
Party 2
2. Stephen Davey aged 36 miner (brother of Catherine Bassett nee Davey and husband to Ann Bassett)
Party 3
3. John Bassett, aged 36 Miner
4. Catherine aged 33 (nee Catherine Davey)
5. Francis aged 11
6. John aged 10
Comment: this is obvious when John bought his family out to Australia, less obvious is if he came out earlier than this.
Evidence to support that John Bassett came out eariler than 1857
"It was in 1855 also that the two young Cornishmen, Nicholas Bassett, showed William Kelly cakes of retorted gold like Dutch cheeses, at Sailors Gully Eaglehawk. James Nicholas is credited in some quarters with setting up the first steam crushing machine" (source Hopkins, Ruth, 1994, Cousin Jack, Man for The Times, A History of the Cornish People Victoria, published Bendigo p. 20)
There is a notation on a mining lease application for ground in Specimen Hill, Sailors Gully made in 1861 which included then following special remarks that "The applicant had been in possession of the ground for 5 years" indicating that John Bassett was already mining in the area on this site in 1855 (Source: Bendigo Lease Register, Department of Energy and ……. Registery of Applications, photocopy provided by Noelene Wild)
There were also advertisements placed in the Bendigo Advertiser that indicate that John Bassett was in the area

The proprietors having enlarged their establishment, they have a horse stamper with three heads, worked on the same principle, for sale.

If we assume that John Bassett came out eariler than 1857 which I think we can, then it becomes a question of whether he came out twice before emigrating. And I'm not sure that that at present this can be answered although we do think that John Bassett Snr did come out earlier than 19 Oct 1861 on the "The Great Britian" based on the following evidence - An Article that appeared inthe Methodist History of Victoria and discussions with Professor Ian Brewster the Uniting Church Archivist. see below -
"Mr. John Bassett, known as Grandfather Bassett, was a much-beloved and esteemed local preacher and class-leader". From this we can assume that John Bassett was appointed as one of the several ministers appointed in the circuit to preach itinerantly and to conduct church rites.
source: The Methodist History of Victoria and Tasmania: Originally published in the Spectator, Volume 2, 1998 onwards
However after talking to Professor Ian Brewster the archivist at the Uniting Church archives, we began to feel that John Bassett(Snr) must have arrived earlier than 1861 to be refer as "a much-loved and esteemed local preacher". Professor Brewster felt that such terms of endearment indicated that John Bassett (Snr) must have arrived earlier in Australia. This lead us to look further afield and we found a John Bassett on the Marco Polo 1853 which may have been our John Bassett accompanied by his son John Bassett (Jnr). (The ages match perfectly).
It is interesting to note that one of the "family stories" is that John Bassett (Snr) was wealthly and bought over a lot cornish miners; perhaps the story should be that he went backwards and forwards between Australia and Cornwall bringing accross different family members until the whole family (or most of it) migrated.
Since father and son appeared to have travelled together then this is strong circumstantial evdence that these are our two John Bassetts, particularly because this is the only other record of John Bassett Snr that we have of him coming our to Australia.
