Transcription of Documents John Bassett's affidavit in his Insolvency case Schedule of John Bassett In the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria Insolvency Jurisdiction.

In the matter of the Petition of John Bassett of Sailors Gully Eaglehawk near Sailors Gully Eaglehawk near Sandhurst County unnamed in the Colony of Victoria, Quartz Crusher.

I, John Bassett of Sailors Gully Eaglehawk near Sandhurst - County unnamed in the Colony of Victoria Quartz Crusher make with and say as follows

That in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven I arrived in the colony aforesaid with a sum of one thousand and five hundred pounds and machinery of the value of four hundred pounds. That five months after my arrival one of my children was taken ill and died. That I came to Sailors Gully aforesaid almost immediately after my arrival and put up a Crushing machine which paid pretty well for two or three years and with the profits I improved the plant and machinery and purchased the land and erected my dwelling. That in or about the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty one WN Paul who was indebted to me for purchase price of a quartz claim to the amount of three hundred pounds and against whom I recovered a verdict because insolvent and I lost the said sum and also nearly one hundred pounds in law expense. That I have lost four valuable horses worth three hundred pounds one was lost in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty two. Two were stolen in the same year and one died in one thousand eight hundred and sixty one. That in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty I was taken seriously ill and from that time to the present have never been able to do a days work and I am at the present time confined to the house and am a confirmed invalid. That I have paid for Doctors Bills a sum of two hundred pounds at least. That being unable to attend to the machine it didn't pay and in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty three I applied to one William Davey to advance me money on mortgage of my land and buildings thereon and is now the sum of four hundred and ninety pounds due to him thereon. That in the month of March one thousand eight hundred and sixty three one of my children was taken ill and died and two other of my children were laid up with fever and caused me great expense, That Henry Rodda the Elder Henry Rodda the younger and Robert Grieve have served me with summonses out of the County Court to appear on Tuesday next-and I fear that they will issue an execution against me goods and then a warrant against my person. That my health is so very bad I have no hopes of being able to attend to my business again and there despair of paying my creditors that I have a wife and three children depending on me for support.
