Eaglehawk Cemetery, Eaglehawk, , Victoria, AustraliaE-Mail: bct@netcon.net.au URL: http://www.bencemtrust.com.au/Eaglehawk_Cemetery.htm Eaglehawk Cemetery 5 Victoria Street, 5 Victoria Street, Eaglehawk,, Victoria 3556 Australia (Grenfell Street, Reserve and Victoria Streets, adjacent to Neangar Memorial Park, Eaglehawk) The Government gazette dated 9th December 1863 stated "A site for a cemetery at Eaglehawk has been reserved by Order of the Government on 28th September 1863". The area reserved was 5 acres fronting Reserve Street. The Eaglehawk Old Monumental Section is laid out in orderly rectangular plats. It has all denominations and a Paupers section. There are many magnificent trees lining the roadways such as Bunya Pines, Morton Bay Figs, Oak, Hoop Pine, Canary Island Pine and Silky Oak. The first recorded burial at the Eaglehawk Cemetery is that of 21 year old John Edmond McDonough. He was interred in Grave 1 Section C on 6th July 1864. Today there is still a monument standing that was erected in his memory. There have been 6 Sextons live in the Sextons Residence formerly located near the front gates of the old monumental section. The cottage was built in the 1870's and was demolished in the 1970's. |

- ↑ Stear - the death of Mrs Catherine Stear at her residence Lake Charm Cottage, Mount Korong Road, California Gully on Monday morning removes an old and esteemed resident of California Gully at the age of 85 years. Deceased, who was born in Leeton, England arrived in Australia with her parents at the age of 9 years. She was married to Mr William Stear at the age of 20 years. Her husband predeceased her by many years. She leaves one son James (Mildura) and two daughters - Mrs E.Joyce (Chinkapook) and Mrs.J.Stone (Scotts Creek) to mourn the loss of a devoted mother. The funeral yesterday to Eaglehawk Cemetery was attended by many friends and relatives. The casket was carried to the grave by Messrs. J.Mitchell, E.Clark and two grandsons Stear. The service in the home and the grave were conducted by Mr.R.R.Gill. Mr Wm Farmer carried out the funeral.
