Comments The 1851 Census was taken on the 30th March 1851.

Estimation of the birthdate of the Bassett family based on the age given at the time of the census is as follows if they are born before June of add one year to the age if born after March and reduce the year of birth by one year:-

John Bassett aged60possibly born 1791 (Death certificate stated age at marrige 22 years makes birth date c1790)
William Bassett aged 34possibly born 1817 (was christened in 1816 IGI)

Ann (Bassett) aged24possibly born 1827 (Christened 1826 per IGI) John Bassett aged30possibly born 1821 (Christened in 1820 per IGI)

These families appear very close which would help to explain their pattern immigration to Australia Martha may have been called Matilda
