Little is known of Michael Francisco. He was, perhaps, one of the least "public" of the Franciscus children. However, in the records of the WPA of Virginia Historical Inventory, Bath County, for the Tankersley Home, comes the following information: The location is two miles south of Ft. Lewis, VA, near Route #625. Owners of the Tankersley home have been .i.Archer P. Strother; who deeded it to .i.Charles C. Francisco; in 1840; then Charles deeded it to .i.William F. Francisco; in 1878; and William deeded it to .i.John H. Francisco; in 1897; and finally it was deeded to P. A. Tankersley in 1911. It is described as an eight room, two-story house. The front is built colonial style of brick and the back is a modern frame structure. The finishing work on the outside of the house is hand carved and beautiful. The interior work is of expert craftsmanship. The bricks were burned on the place (Authors note: I interpret this to mean that the bricks were "fired" at the same location as the house was built.) Mr. .i.H. L. Warwick; states the house was built by his grandfather, .i.Sam Lewis; (to see the relationship between the Warwick, Lewis, and Francisco families, refer to the descendents of Michael's brother George [10.]). The significance of all of this for descendents of .i. Michael Francisco; comes from the description of the "Historical Significance" of this home: Mike Francisco, who operated a blacksmith shop which was located near the site of this house, had a narrow escape from the Indians. They were coming up the road with a prisoner when Francisco spied them. He ran across the road into a gully, falling between two stones. The Indians passed by and failed to see him. Fortunately he was not captured. The ridge on which he hid was named for him "Mike's Ridge". Some other records in which Michael Francisco can be found include the following: Botetourt Co., VA, Book 4, page 59 - 1766: .i. Michael Francisco; delinquent on tax lists. Book 7, page 120 - 1771: Michael Francisco receives hemp certificate. May 20, 1777, receipt from Michael Francisco to .i.Thomas Madison; for his pay as a drover. Book 9, page 925: July 1786: Will of .i.Joseph Mays; refers to land left to his son, Isaac, which is described as "to cabin where Michael Francisco formerly lived." 1786 - tithables of southern part of Rockbridge Co., VA: Michael Francisco with one tithable. Michael Francisco appears on tax lists of Augusta County, VA for the years 1782, 1783, 1784, 1785, 1786, 1787, but does not appear after this date in Augusta Co., VA. The 1797 Botetourt Co., VA, marriage record for Hannah lists her father as .i.Michael Francisco;. The 1810 Botetourt Co., VA census shows a Michael Francisco & wife, both over 45 (born before 1765). In 1819 an estate appraiser was appointed for settlement of Michael's estate in Montgomery Co., VA. (Book 21, p. 27) No will has been found for Michael Francisco.
