Aged 22, Henry married a girl called Mary Parsons, who was 19. They stayed in St Paul's Walden, where they had seven children together and Henry worked as a tanner. Mary died in 1827, aged 38, leaving Henry with probably five surviving children to support, the youngest of whom was only a few months old.

Henry's father died in 1832.

Henry does not appear to have remarried. The 1841 census finds him living at Whitwell, the main village in the parish, with his daughter Mary, son Thomas and Thomas's family. The Tithe Applotment for St Paul's Walden drawn up the following year lists a "Henry Crane" as tenant of a row of cottages at the eastern end of Whitwell village, adjoining the tannery (owned by a Samuel Wellingham) which was presumably where this Henry worked. There being no "Henry Crane" in the parish in the 1841 census it therefore seems reasonable to conclude that the Tithe Applotment misrecorded Henry Cain's name. The row of cottages still stands, now called 4, 6 and 8 High Street, Whitwell. They were old cottages even when Henry lived there, dating from the 1600s or earlier.[7]

Henry's mother died in 1844.

Henry appears to have lived with his son Thomas for the rest of his life, appearing with Thomas's family in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Henry died aged 75, and was buried on 5th January 1862 at St Paul's Walden.

1786: Mar[ch] 12 Henry, Son of John and Sarah Cain

This baptism has been linked to the Henry Cain who married Mary Parsons on the basis of the birthplace and age given by the adult Henry in the censuses. Whilst no named connection has been found between the child baptised in 1783 and the adult who married in 1808, nor has any evidence has been found suggesting that the Henry baptised in 1783 died young or married anyone else.

  7. The cottages are listed buildings, described as 2 and 4 High Street in the listing description, but that pre-dates a renumbering of this part of High Street in the 1990s, when a new row of cottages was built beside this row, called Tannery Yard. The grander house owned by the tannery owner Samuel Wellingham in the 1842 Tithe Applotment also still stands, now called 16A High Street and also a listed building, along with one of the adjoining surviving barns from the tannery complex.
