Samuel Cain was baptised on 25th March 1798 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of Sarah Cain formerly Archer and her husband John Cain.
On 14th April 1822, aged 24, he married Sarah Rayment. They went on to have five children together between 1823 and 1835. The first three children were baptised at St Paul's Walden and the younger two at neighbouring King's Walden. Two of the baptisms at St Paul's Walden give the family's abode as Frogmore, a hamlet mostly in King's Walden parish but on the border of the two parishes. All the children's baptisms describe Samuel as a labourer.
Samuel's father died in 1832, and his mother in 1844.
By 1841 the family was living in Whitwell, the main village in St Paul's Walden parish. Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Sarah, Samuel and a selection of their children and grandchildren living together in Whitwell. Samuel worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Sarah was a plaiter, presumably plaiting straw for the local hat making industry.
Sarah died in 1872, aged 77. Samuel outlived her by just over five years. He was buried at St Paul's Walden on 23rd January 1878, aged 79.
