Sarah Rayment was baptised on 11th October 1795 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, daughter of John and Sarah Rayment.
On 14th April 1822, aged 26, she married Samuel Cain, who worked as an agricultural labourer. They went on to have five children together between 1823 and 1835. The first three children were baptised at St Paul's Walden and the younger two at neighbouring King's Walden. Two of the baptisms at St Paul's Walden give the family's abode as Frogmore, a hamlet mostly in King's Walden parish but on the border of the two parishes.
By 1841 the family was living in Whitwell, the main village in St Paul's Walden parish. Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Sarah, Samuel and a selection of their children and grandchildren living together in Whitwell. Sarah worked as a plaiter, presumably plaiting straw for the local hat making industry.
Sarah died at the age of 77. She was buried at St Paul's Walden on 1st November 1872. Samuel outlived her by just over five years.
