Dalton, look again at your records. Allie Missouri Payne was Harvey's wife, our Granddaddy Nix's youngest brother. Harvey Andrew Nix was born April 12, 1894. He and Allie Missouri Payne,s youngest son Daniel Howard Nix lives just about 2 miles from me. I saw and talked with him about 4 weeks ago and told him about the letters we found in the show box. He wants to see them when we can get together. He said he would recognize his mother's (Allie) handwriting.

Some comments by Dan NIX, son of Harvey, on 7 July 2003. He visited me in Madison with my sister Earlene Stanfield, for the day and proamised to return SOON!

We did not get through with all of our discussions becasuse me continued to get off on side topics and then forget what our main line of discussion was. Maybe next time we can prepare an agenda and attempt to keep to it.

When discussing his father, Harvey, Dan said that He was only slightly over three years old when his Father (Harrison Jenning) died. ( I am not sure if Dan knows any of the details of his early death). He said that by the time Harvey was 9 years old he was working in the mines digging coal. Therefore he missed all of the formal schooling and could not read or write even in latter life. He never owned a farm and always farmed on shares with the land owner. He was a share cropper for all of his life.

Military record for Harvey Nix listed on Page # 92 , Alabama probate court , Etowah County, Records; "List of Honorably Discharged WW I Veterans" Harvey NIX.

Harvey Andrew Nix was the youngest of six sons of Harrison Jennings Nix and Louiza Penitas (Netie) Conn. He was the grandson of Daniel, and the great grandson of Jennings. One of the six died as a young boy but the other five are registered for World I. Harvey is the only one that actually served during the War. I do not have the full details of his service but do have a note: Military record for Harvey Nix listed on Page # 92 , Alabama probate court , Etowah County, Records; "List of Honorably Discharged WW I Veterans" Harvey Married Allie (Alice Missouri) Payne and they had six children, a girl three boys in a row then two additional girls. Allie was the daughter of Joseph Washington Payne and Mily Ann Hopper, both early families of Warrior River Valley area of Etowah County, Alabama. Some comments by Dan NIX, son of Harvey. When discussing his father, Harvey. Dan said Harvey was only slightly over three years old when his Father (Harrison Jenning) died. The 1930 census shows Harvey, Allie and their first three children living in Hoppers community in Etowah County. Harvey died in 1895, only a few days from his 91 birth day, but in the final years he was a victim of Alzheimer's, an awful disease that robs the brain of its ability, and has impact on all of the family. On the registration card Harvey list his occupation as a timber cutter for the Gulf States Steel Company. They operated the steelmill in Alabama City as well as the coal mines in Altoona. The timber would have been used to shore up the mine as they dug away the coal, and also as cross ties for the narrow gage railroad tracks they built into the mines. Small carts were pulled by mules to bring the coal out of the mine and dump it at the tipple.
