  6.   Harriet Ann Peterson Pierce.

Harriet Ann Peterson: She had true pitch and was an outstanding seamstress. She loved to dance.
She had true pitch and was an outstanding seamstress. She loved to dance.
When Harriet was 5 years old her family moved to Indian Lake, Minnesota. It was there, six years later that two latter-day missionaries, Elders William Bowns and Loren Christensen, found the Peterson family. As Harriet told the story: ..."Father hired the two elders to help him with his crops but told them he wanted none of their talk of religion. The elders readily agreed. However, curiosity soon got the best of father and every once in a while he would ask a question which they would answer as briefly as possible and go on with their work. It wasn't long until he was anxious to study the Gospel. By the time the elders went on their way he was thoroughly converted, as was mother. On the 14th of June 1885 they were baptized by elder Pomeroy. Before these elders came mother say elder Pomeroy in a dream. When he called at our home she said she knew him, that it seemed she had always known him. This was a great testimony to us that he was a true messenger and that he was representing the true Christ. Mother died nearly a year after they were baptized leaving father with seven children, and one infant son.
In June 1887, we left our home and all kindred in Minnesota. Relatives and friends had turned against us for joining the Mormons. I will never forget the Methodist Minister who spent so much time trying to get father not to listen to those terrible men. When father told him he was coming to Utah he stayed with him nearly all night pleading with him not to take his girls as something terrible would happen to them...we would be forced to marry Brigham Young or some other leader of the Church. We arrived at our new home in Fremont, Wayne County, Utah near the 24th of July. In December 1889, Mother and we children were sealed to father in the Manti temple by Daniel H. Wells. Always before this I would dream of Mother, she would always be sick or dying but after her work was done I could always see her as she was when she was with us. This was a great testimony to me that she was pleased and more happy."
In spite of the horrible fate the minister had predicted for her, Grandma led a happy, useful life. Being the eldest, she mothered her siblings. She loved fun, even a bit of mischief. She tells of one time when she and a girlfriend became angry with their school teacher so while he was away for lunch they crammed all the coal they could get into the old potbellied stove used to heat the school house. The teacher returned to find the room very warm indeed. He lined the other students up outside then insisted that Harriet and her friend have the privilege of digging the blazing lumps of coal out of the stove with a fire shovel and carrying them outside.
I suppose she would have been considered a rebel by some of her more dignified, or possibly envious, neighbors. In a day when it was considered vulgar for a girl to ride a horse other than side saddle. She donned a pair of her brothers trousers and with some of her more adventerous girl friends enjoyed a bit of racing around the hills near her home. These excursions were taken after dark to avoid offending the tender sensibilities of their critics.
