If GRIFFIN was the oldest child, he was born ca. 1820 in time to be included in the 1820 census with his parents.

1850 Fountain Co., IN, census, p.102A, Richland Twp., August 9, 1850, John M. 1860 Vermilion Co., IL, census, p.570, Danville, June 4, 1860, Hamilton White: 127/128, GRIFFIN JONES, 40 M, painter, $100 real, $25 personal, OH; Martha A., 26 F, IN; Edith M., 8/12 F, IL.

1863 February. GRIFFIN wrote his cousin JANE C. LOVE in a letter dated July 16, 1888, that "My first Wife I married died in Lafonjette [Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co.?] indiania february 1863 And she had one Childe hur Name is Edith. M. Jones . . . And her Mother was Buried at the Baptist grave yard in fountain Country"

1863 March 15, Independence, Warren Co., IN, REBECCA ANN DAWSON wrote her great-uncle JOEL L. JONES: "I expect you have heard before this that GRIFFIN JONES has lost his wife. He wanted one of us girls to go and keep house for him this summer but I believe he has broke up housekeeping and is going to travel in Ill with an agency for the insurance company."

ca. 1863 April. ADA WYCKOFF wrote her cousin TIGHLMAN JONES: "I forget whether I wrote to you or not that. Cousin John Jones and Griffins wives were dead. Ambrose is in Kansas. What cousin Joel is it that is dead we had not heard it." [The identity of this John Jones is not known; see an unknown John Jones with Griffin in his 1870 census.]

1863 June 11, GRIFFIN B. JONES md. ELIZABETH R. DAVIS, Putnam Co., IN, Book 3, p.360. (This appears to be the wife that Joel referred to in his Sept. 1864 letter to Tighlman.)

1864 Jan. 21, ADA WYCKOFF wrote her cousin TIGHLMAN JONES: "Griffin is at our house now / he came last week. He looks as natural as ever. I do not know what his political scntiments are as I did not know that he was here untill to day and then I just spoke to him at church."

1864 June 13, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. ADA WYCKOFF wrote her uncle JOEL L. JONES: "We havent heard from uncle Isaiahs family directly in a long time / I get a letter every once in a while from Griffin and he always tells when he hears from them / I don’t care about them writing if they write such secesh letters always as (?)somae I have read. We have not for a long time from Aunt Mary or Uncle Joseys folks. I think it is so strange uncle Josey don't write. I wrote to him the next week after I came home from school."

1864 July 16, TIGHLMAN JONES wrote his brother ZILLMAN: "I have word from Fountain Co. of the 3rd. all well. GRIFFEN is Still on the Hunt of a wife."

1864 Sept. 19, Jasper Co., IL. Joel L. Jones wrote his son Tighlman: "I have just came home from attica. found all well. . . . Anjaline and Griff has gon to Ohio. Griff was married to a hore & she left him & he has a Divorse & has gon to Ohio to get another."

1864 Sept. 19, Cedar Villa, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff wrote her cousin Tighlman Jones: "I received a letter from Griffin Saturday evening. He wanted us to meet he and Angeline and his little girl in Cincinnati tomorrow evening. Griffin is going to finish off our house for us. I don't know how long they will be here."

ca. 1865-1866, GRIFFIN wrote his cousin JANE C. LOVE in a letter dated July 16, 1888: "And then the next Woman I Married was Martha (?)harper lived near uncle Reason Jones an lived in his (?)day so I lived with hur 3 yers in indianapolis and she had one Child and I called her name ofter hur Mother and my one Mothers and hur name in full is Leah Mard?th A. Jones so we Called hur for a short name so she goes By the name Magie Jones." However, GRIFF skipped the wife that he divorced in 1864, so the HARPER lady was his third wife; a HARPER family lived adjacent to the MARY JONES farm in Symmes Twp., Hamilton Co., OH; J.S. and MARGARET HARPER lived nearby; their only child was MARTHA b. ca. 1842.

1868 Dec. 29, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her uncle Joel L. Jones: "Griffins wife wrote in that Sarepta was very low / they didnt think she could live at all."

GRIFFIN did not explain what happened to MARTHA HARPER in his July 16, 1888, letter to JANE LOVE, but said that he "married My 3 Wife in indianapolis a Bout 7 Years after my last Wife died." This would be his 4th wife, Mrs. LUCY KENT, in 1870. They were married in Tippecanoe Co. IN, not Marion Co. --

1870 May 25, Griffin B. JONES md. [Mrs.] Lucy A. KENT, Tippecanoe Co., IN, Book C-13, p.41. Her maiden name was Lucy Ann BASTION; she married James KENT, Nov. 27, 1862, Tippecanoe Co., IN.

The 1870 census for Indianapolis was enumerated twice, and both are on microfilm, but only the 2nd enumeration done early the following year appears to be indexed at Ancestry.com. -- 1870 Marion Co., IN, census, p.448A, 16th Sub-Division, 7th Ward, Indianapolis, Feb. 9, 1871, Marquis D. Losey: 171/230, GRIFFIN B. JONES, 51 M W, furniture repairer, $100 personal, OH; Lucy A., 42 F W, keeping house, IN; Edith, 10 F W, at school, IL; Margaret, 3 F W, IN [Edith's half-sister]; Jessie KENT, 5 F W, at school, IN [Lucy's dau. from her first marriage]; enumerated with GRIFFIN as part of family #230, JOHN JONES [who is this?], 47 M W, carpenter, OH; Lizzie, 21 F W, boarding, KY; Laura, 10 F W, at school, KS. (residence #171 was apparently a hotel or large boarding house as 2 other families were enumerated under this number)

1873 Feb. 24, Shawnee Plains, Newtown, Fountain Co., IN. Isaiah Jones wrote his brother Joel: "all tho it is not counted sick ley our Boy are onley greifen and heis not able to [do] enny thing nor haint all faul and winter"

1878 Dec. 8, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Zillman Jones: "Where is Griffin living and what is he doing / did he have his little girls with him / he doesnt write to any of his friends here at all. Ma wrote to him over a year ago"

GRIFFIN did not specifically explain what happened to LUCY in his July 16, 1888, letter to JANE LOVE. The 1880 census indicates that he was widowed, and his April 1884 letter indicates that he was married to a lady named ANNA, and that they had been married at least a year. However, LUCY ANN and ANNA may be the same person. GRIFF also refers to a lady named ___ who raised his daughter Maggie.

no date [ca. 1873], Ada Wyckoff wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Heard from Griffin 3 or 4 weeks ago / he was better."

no date [ca. 1876 between Sept. 18 and Dec. 10], Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Jennie do you ever hear from Griffin / I wrote a long time ago to Edith and directed my letter to Lafayette but received no answer."

1879 Sept. Griffin visited Ada and family in Hamilton Co., OH.

1880 March 9, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousins Jane Love, Lillice Jones, and Zillman Jones: "Have not heard from uncle Isaiahs family since Griffin was here in September."

JONES, [relationship blank], M W 62, widowed, cabinet maker, OH OH unknown; apparently a boarder with 458/526, Eliza J. BAXTER, W F 48, widow, b. KY, and 3 daughters, plus 2 additional boarders -- a male blacksmith and a female dressmaker.

1880 Marion Co., IN, census, p.364D, Indianapolis, June 1, 1880: Maggie JONES, W F 13, servant, IN IN IN; with 14/42, Mrs. A.J. Howard, W F 44; and several others.

1882 Jan. 2, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Nancy Thompson and her husband and Mary Ferris and her son Albanus visited us this fall. . . . Mary and Nancy told us that they heard you had moved off of the farm but could not tell where you had gone / they said they had written to you but recieved no answer. . . . We have not heard from Griffin for a year now. Mary Nancy nor Brown had not heard from him indeed knew nothing of any of uncle Isaiahs familly"

ca. 1883 May 14, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "You asked where Griffith was. I had a postal from him last Friday / he was in Indianapolis / he said Edith was lying very low but did not say what was the matter and he said as soon as there was a change in her he was coming to Cincinnati again."

1883 May 22, Griffin md. his 5th wife, Mrs. Anna Sharpe, at the courthouse in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.

1883 Aug. 10, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "In my letter you missed I told you Griffith and his wife were here. He was married the 22nd day of May and came right here / they were here five weeks / are living now in Newport Kentucky. Griffith sent you a postal telling you where he was. He married a Mrs Anna Sharpe a lady from Louisville some 20 years younger than himself."

1884 April 14, Newport, Campbell Co., KY. Griffin wrote his cousins Jane Love, Zillman Jones, and Lillice Jones that he and his wife Anna had moved to Newport, KY, across the river from Cincinnati. He reported that his children are both in Indianapolis. Edith "maried a man Name of george W Hrold / they live on south Delaware street No 62 ½ at his mothers" and "Magie my single daughter lives at Mrss Robinsons / North illinois streete / No 122 North at Mrss Bolisons Boardig House. . . . my Wife sends her love to you all / she can not right any so i have to do her notig as welds mine . . . ca. 1885 Dec. 28, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Griffin has moved to Madison Indiania / we have not had but one letter since they moved."

1886 Jan. 30, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. Griffin wrote his cousins Jane Love and Lillice Jones that he and Anna intend to move back to either Newport, KY, or Cincinnati around the first or middle of March so he can be there for the Spring trade because they will "starve to death" in Madison if they stay there. His daughter Magie stayed with them for 3 weeks over Christmas, then went to Indianapolis, her "Old stomping ground," to the lady that raised her, Mrs. Robison on Illinois Street. If they wish to write her, to direct their letters to Magie L. Jones. His other daughter, Edith, lives in Cincinnati, 365 West Court Street, but he hadn't heard from her this winter.

1888 May 10, Madisonville, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "the last I heard of Griffith he and his last wife parted and he says he heard she was dead / He has a woman he says it is his mothers neice keeping house for him in Newport.
