1863 February. GRIFFIN wrote his cousin JANE LOVE in a letter dated July 16, 1888, that "My first Wife I married died in Lafonjette [Lafayette? in Tippecanoe Co.] indiania february 1863 And she had one Childe hur Name is Edith. M. Jones . . . And her Mother was Buried at the Baptist grave yard in fountain Country"

1863 March 15. Independence [Warren Co., IN, next north of Fountain Co.]. I expect you have heard before this that GRIFFIN JONES has lost his wife. He wanted one of us girls to go and keep house for him this summer but I believe he has broke up housekeeping and is going to travel in Ill with an agency for the insurance company. --excerpt from a letter written by REBECCA ANN DAWSON to her great-uncle, JOEL L. JONES.

1863 June 11, GRIFFIN B. JONES md. ELIZABETH R. DAVIS, Putnam Co., IN, Book 3, p.360. (This appears to be the wife that Joel referred to in his Sept. 1864 letter to Tighlman.)

1864 July 16. "I have word from Fountain Co. of the 3rd. all well. GRIFFEN is Still on the Hunt of a wife." --excerpt from a letter written by TIGHLMAN JONES to his brother, ZILLMAN

1864 September. "I have just came home from attica. found all well. . . . ANJALINE and GRIFF has gon to Ohio. GRIFF was married to a hore & she left him & he has a Devorse & has gon to Ohio to get another." --excerpt from a letter written by JOEL L. JONES to his son, TIGHLMAN (Anjaline was Griff's sister)

1864 Sept. 19, Cedar Villa [Ohio]. "I received a letter from GRIFFIN Saturday evening. He wanted us to meet he and ANGELINE and his little girl in Cincinnati tomorrow evening. GRIFFIN is going to finish off our house for us. I don't know how long they will be here [in Ohio]." --excerpt from a letter written by ADA WYCKOFF to her cousin, TIGHLMAN JONES

ca. 1865-1866, GRIFFIN wrote his cousin JANE C. LOVE in a letter dated July 16, 1888, that his 2nd wife [actually his 3rd wife] was MARTHA (?)HARPER who lived near his Uncle REASON JONES in Hamilton Co., OH. GRIFF and MARTHA lived in Indianapolis for 3 years and had one child named after her mother and GRIFF's mother -- LEAH Mard?th A. JONES [the 1870 census identifies her as MARGARET] -- but they call her MAGIE JONES for short. She is married and lives in Newport near GRIFF. She married a man by the name of EDWARD, a Dutchman [German], but he doesn't talk any Dutch. They are getting along for they have been married 2 years this coming October, and have a baby boy some 11 months old. [GRIFF skipped the wife that he divorced in 1864, so the HARPER lady was his third wife; a HARPER family lived adjacent to the MARY JONES farm in Symmes Twp., Hamilton Co., OH.]

ca. 1867, GRIFFIN's 2nd daughter, MAGGIE was born.

GRIFFIN did not explain what happened to MARTHA in his July 16, 1888, letter to JANE LOVE, but said that he "married My 3 Wife in indianapolis a Bout 7 Years after my last Wife died." This would be his 4th wife, Mrs. LUCY KENT, in 1870. They were married in Tippecanoe Co. IN, not Marion Co.

1870 May 25, GRIFFIN B. JONES md. [Mrs.] LUCY A. KENT, Tippecanoe Co., IN, Book C-13, p.41. Her maiden name was Lucy Ann BASTION; she married James KENT, Nov. 27, 1862, Tippecanoe Co., IN, and may be the "Anna" in GRIFF's later letters.

JONES, 51 M W, furniture repairer, $100 personal, OH; Lucy A., 42 F W, keeping house, IN [Griff's last wife]; Edith, 10 F W, at school, IL; Margaret, 3 F W, IN [Edith's half-sister]; Jessie KENT, 5 F W, at school, IN [Lucy's daughter].

1880 Marion Co., IN, census, p.305C, 9th Ward, Indianapolis, June 17, 1880, John C. Maxwell: GRIFFIN B. JONES, [relationship blank], M W 62, widowed, cabinet maker, OH OH unknown; apparently a boarder with 458/526, Eliza J. BAXTER, W F 48, widow, b. KY, and 3 daughters, plus 2 additional boarders -- a male blacksmith and a female dressmaker.

1880 Marion Co., IN, census, p.364D, Indianapolis, June 1, 1880: MAGGIE JONES, W F 13, servant, IN IN IN; with 14/42, Mrs. A.J. Howard, W F 44; and several others, but no Robinson individuals.

no date; GRIFFIN wrote his cousin Jane C. Love in Jasper Co., IL, that his daughter EDITH and her husband GERG W. HERALD had moved to Indianapolis, IN, the 5th of this month. They moved there for good.

1884 April 14, Newport, KY (Campbell Co.), No. 82 Walnut St. GRIFFIN wrote his cousin Jane C. Love in Jasper Co., IL, that his dear children, MAGIE and EDITH are both well and living in Indianapolis, IN. EDITH married GEORGE W. HAROLD and lives at No. 62½ Delaware St. at his mother's. MAGIE is single and lives at Moss Robinson's, No. 122 North Illinois St. at Mrs. Bolison's boarding house. GRIFF got a letter from them the previous week and wrote them to come to Newport to him, but whether they will or not is more than he knows.

1886 Jan. 30, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. Griffin wrote his cousins Jane Love and Lillice Jones that his daughter Magie stayed with them for 3 weeks over Christmas, then went to Indianapolis, her "Old stomping ground," to the lady that raised her, Mrs. Robison on Illinois Street. If they wish to write her, to direct their letters to Magie L. Jones.

Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "the last I heard of Griffith he . . . has a woman he says it is his mothers neice keeping house for him in Newport. His daughter Maggie lives in Newport too. I have not heard from them for quit awhile. Maggie married right well"

GRIFF and MARTHA lived in Indianapolis for 3 years and had one child named after her mother and GRIFF's mother -- LEAH Mard?th A. JONES [the 1870 census identifies her as MARGARET] -- but they call her MAGIE JONES for short. She is married and lives in Newport near GRIFF. Undated letter (probably written toward the end of 1888) from Griffin Jones to his cousin Jane Love [paraphrased]: Our Cousin Ady Wikoff has almost gone crazy, so my daughter Maggie tells me. She was out there to see her "late this fall."

1889 April 11, Newport, KY, No. 82 Walnut St. Griffin wrote his cousins in Jasper Co., IL, that his daughter Maggie is well, her husband, too. She married Edward Trotman and has one child 18 months old who talks some. They live in Newport, No. 114 Walnut St., the same street that he lives on, but one square away.

1889 Dec. 11, Mason, Warren Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "Mrs Baxter had a card last thursday evening from Griffins daughter Mattie informing us of the death of her little daughter but we did not get it in time to attend the funeral, / I wrote to her that evening and I asked her where her father and sister Edith were, / I have not received an answer yet."

1890 Nov. 27, Newport, KY, No. 66 Fourth St. Griffin wrote his cousin Jane Love that he had just moved back to Newport from Lawrenceburg, IN [in Dearborn Co.] because he could not make a living there. He reports that Edith and Maggie are well.

1891 Nov. 15, Cincinnati, OH, No. 21 Betty St. Griffin wrote his cousin Jane Love that his second daughter MAGIE lives in Newport, KY, has 2 children, that her husband is a stone mason by trade and does very well. Also that MAGIE has been married 5 years now, married on October 22nd as he remembers.

1892 April 17, Newport, KY, No. 26 _____. Griffin wrote his cousin Jane Love that his daughters Edith lives in Cincinnati, OH, and Maggie lives here in Newport. Both are married. Correspondence from the family letters and papers of Jane Love and her cousin, Lillice Jones Harper, courtesy John, Danny, and Dave Harper in 2001 and 2004, transcribed by Brenda Boyer. Griffin's difficult handwriting and spelling is paraphrased here.

The right age to be Maggie's husband, another Edward W. Trautmann lived in Kenton Co., KY, enumerated in the 1930 census, and died there Oct. 3, 1951.
