George Blackburn Family Cemetery

This cemetery was established for the family of Maj. George Blackburn (1747-1817) & his wife Prudence Berry Blackburn (1754-1836).
Their many grandchildren included Kentucky Governor (1879-83) Dr. Luke Pryor Blackburn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_P._Blackburn; U.S. Senator (1885-95, 1901-07) Joseph C. S. Blackburn, who was later chairman of the Lincoln Memorial Commission (1914-18); Kentucky Senator and Secretary of State James Blackburn; and St. Louis Mayor Edward Blackburn.
In her will, the Blackburn's granddaughter Elizabeth J. Blackburn (wife of Dr. C. J. Blackburn) instructed her executor to "have a substantial stone wall built around my Grandfather Blackburn's family graveyard in Woodford County and to have the graves and monuments therein repaired and put in good order, the whole not to cost exceeding one thousand dollars." (Franklin County, Kentucky, Will Book 3, Page 327).
The cemetery is currently located on the Lane's End Farm (Fort Blackburn Division) on Old Frankfort Pike (KY 1681) near the Woodford/Franklin County border. The cemetery can be accessed by appointment by contacting the Lane's End Farm Security Office at 1500 Midway Road near Versailles. Security personnel must guide and accompany visitors to the cemetery. Visitors must cross an active rail line that runs through the farm.
Information obtained from the Woodford County Historical Society shows that in June 1995 the cemetery was somewhat overgrown. "On the death of George T. Fishback III, his farm and estate was auctioned off a few weeks ago. A week after the auction the cemetery was read and these stones were listed. They were compared to another list that was done by Ruth Coyle (no date was listed). These stones were still readable even after a couple of trees had fallen across the middle of the cemetery, breaking some of the crypts and some head stones. The cemetery is large, about 60 x 60 feet, with a stone fence surrounding it that is in very good shape for its age. The farm contained two houses, the one that was the living quarters now, was a wood structure erected in 1857, while to the rear was another house that was built about the early 1800s of brick. The two story brick structure contained two rooms up and two rooms down with a chimney in the middle of the building. It was now being used as storage but the interior indicated that the wood was still in very sound condition. The brick house interior walls were exposed brick, with the interior roofing rafters expose also, but seem to be in good condition also. It was understood that the farm was purchased by William Farrish of Lane's End Farm and that the house was on the National Historic Register, but which house it is not certain. The wood structure is in very bad shape and would cost a lot to restore it to any reasonable condition."
A visit in September 2010 revealed that the stone wall surrounding the cemetery has been professionally restored, and the grounds are in excellent shape. Some of the burial stones are broken, but many are in good condition, considering their age. An excellent overhead view of this cemetery (from an altitude of 1,069 feet) can be accessed through Google Earth at the coordinates listed.
