Ernest was bachelor and lived in a residential hotel in Carroll, Iowa. Pat remembers his bringing her gifts on holidays, and especially recalls how much his gift of a new red bicycle meant to her on the Christmas after her grandfather died. Pat recalls seeing him sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch of the hotel, rocking there with the other boarders. When he became ill, the sisters and Pat often drove the 100-mile trip to Carroll to visit him in the hospital. This was in a 11-year old 1928 Chevy.
