Pat nicknamed her "Beanie" Lena was a pharmacist and owned a drugstore with her brother, Henry. (called "Uncle Bud" by Pat Chatham) She had been badly injured and walked with a cane. Pat recalls her brushing and brushing her long hair. Her grandmother was the official cook and Lena made the desserts and bread. Pat's favorite dessert, "Fastnachts," was a fried dough recipe handed down from her Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors. After Jeremiah O"Connell's death in 1936, the family had to apply for welfare which completely humiliated both sisters. After their brother Henry died, leaving them a substantial inheritance, were they finaancially stable again. They insisted on paying back every welfare dollar given to them! When Pat Chatham was in college in Ames, 16 miles away from Boone, the two sisters drove over once a week in their Ford coupe to bring clean laundry.
