[edit] ==============================Lowell Sun, 23 May, 2012: EDNA D. GALLAGHER Lowell-- Edna D. (Durkee) Gallagher RN, age 97, a former resident of the Merrimack River Valley House in Lowell as well as a former longtime Carlisle resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 21, 2012 at D'Youville Senior Care in Lowell. She was the beloved wife of the late James S. Gallagher, the former fire chief at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA, who died in 1992. Edna was born in Boston, MA on October 17, 1914, a daughter of the late Milford and Margaret (MacInness) Durkee. She moved with her family to Woburn, MA at an early age and graduated from St. Charles School with the Class of 1930. She pursued a nursing career, graduating in 1938. Edna married James S. Gallagher in 1939. In 1942 they moved to Carlisle, MA where she was one of the founding members of St. Irene Church. She was past president of the Catholic Women's Club, was active in the Grange and had been an officer in the Mass. State Grange as well as a leader in the 4H Club. In 1974, they moved to Orleans on Cape Cod, where they both spent many happy hours on their 20 ft. Day Cruiser "Jet." Edna and James also became involved with the Orleans Cardinals Baseball Team. They spent their winters on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Rita (Geoffroy) Gallagher of Lowell; two grandchildren, Katherine Lifner and her husband, Craig, of Maynard, MA and Kelly Currier and her companion, Jay Silva, of Westford, MA; great-grandchildren Craig and Brett Lifner and Bryce Currier. She is also survived by her nephews. She was also the sister of the late Veronica McElligott, Louise Curran and Mary Connolly.
