Boston Globe, The (MA) - June 28, 1992: JAMES S. GALLAGHER, 77 RETIRED FIRE PROTECTION CHIEF Jmes Stanton Gallagher of Orleans, a retired chief of fire protection at Hanscom Air Force base in Bedford, died Friday at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness. He was 77. Mr. Gallagher was born in Brockton and at one point lived in Carlisle. He graduated from the United States Atomic Energy Instructors School. He attended special courses in fire protection, engineering and administration at various universities including the University of Maryland and Boston University. He began his career as a forest firefighter in 1939. In 1942 he became the first civilian employee at Hanscom Field and was the only registered fire protection engineer as of 1972. The Air Force presented him with an Achievement Award in 1963 and he became a specialist on explosives and fuel fire suppression. Mr. Gallagher lectured at several universities such as the University of Connecticut and Purdue University's Department of Engineering. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, New England Association of Fire Chiefs, Massachusetts Association of Fire Chiefs, Massachusetts Fire Department Instructors Association, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was chairman of several committees, including the Orleans Baseball Committee, and in Carlisle, the Finance Committtee and School Building Committee. Mr. Gallagher leaves his wife Edna Durkee Gallagher; a son, Thomas E. of Lowell; two granddaughters, Kathy Lifner and Kelly, both of Concord; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans at 10 a.m., Tuesday. Burial will be held in St. Paul's Cemetery in Hingham at 2 p.m.
