He joined the Union Army with his brother Miles. On a visit home, he, Miles and Leander were picking berries when they were surprised by a band of outlaw raiders led by Harrison Martin. Murray was hard of hearing and did not hear them in time to escape. He was killed and his boots were taken.

- ↑ One record had his death as 19 Mar 1865 at Cleveland, TN, but the Pension Application filed by his father has his death as 28 Mar 1865 in Union Co., GA, near his home. Murray had gone to visit Elizabeth Turner when he was killed by Harrison Martin.
A family story is that he was picking berries with his brothers when they were surprised by a gang of bushwackers. Bailis Murray being hard of hearing did not hear them in time to get away.After he was shot, his boots were stolen.
- ↑ Turner, Baylis M. (or Balis M.)- private March 4, 1862. Roll for December 31, 1863, last on file, shows him absent without leave January 1, 1863. No later record.
- ↑ He was listed as being absent without leave from the Confederate Army.
- ↑ The Pension Application filed by his father, Bailis E. Turner stated he had enlisted in the Union Army in Mar 1863, but the official records have him as being enrolled at Athens, TN on 2 Mar 1865. He was on roll to Apr 30, 1865 (the only one on file). At Knoxville, he is reported killed at Cleveland, TN on Mar 19, 1865.
