Martin, Azariah - entered service 1780 in Amherst County, Virginia, in company of uncle Captain Azariah Martin; moved abt. 1791/2 to Kentucky, where granted Pension age 68 in Clay County in 1834; died 4/14/1834 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky; married 4/1791 to Lucy Rodes, Amherst County, Virginia, at home of her father Charles (Marriage bond 4/20/1791 listed soldier as Azariah Jr.*, signed by Azariah Martin & Azariah Martin Jr., & showed consent of Lucy's father); widow granted Pension age 74 in Madison County, Kentucky, 1840; resided there in 1843; daughter Liberty B, b. 1812, resided there in 1843, one of widow's 6 children; soldier's brother William resided age 74 there in 1840. f-W554, R1637.

  • - Note: the term "Jr." was not necessarily showing a fatner/son relationship, the term "Jr." was many times used to differentiate between two persons of the same name that were not necessarily father and son. "Sr." was normally given to the elder of the two persons, and "Jr." was normally given to the younger of the two to help differentiate them. In this case, Azariah "Jr." was the nephew of Capt. Azariah Martin "Sr.".
