Advisory

Several sources, including the publication "Genealogy and History of the Kauffman-Coffman Families of North America, 1584 to 1937", by Charles F. Kauffman claim that Augustine Coffman married second to Mary Catherine Houtz, but according to Coffman researcher Dr. Don Cooper, it was Augustine Coffman, Jr. that married Mary Catherine Houtz, not Augustine, Sr.
Land records (Northern Neck Land Grants, Vol. 3) prove that Augustine Coffman, Sr. had prior to 29 October 1799, and it was likely his son, Augustine Coffman, Jr. that died in 1818. Also, a Chancery Suit in Shenandoah County, Virginia lists the children of Augustine Coffman, Sr., including Augustine Coffman, Jr.

Notes

On October 2, 1741, Augustine Kaufman disembarked at Philadelphia, Pa. from the ship St. Andrews coming from Rotterdam, Netherlands. February 9, 1756, Augustine Kaufman is listed as a soldier of French & Indian Wars under Captain John Denton and Col. George Wm. Fairfax for Frederick County, Virginia. On March 9, 1763, Fairfax granted Augustine Kaufman of Frederick County, Virginia 200 acres of land on the west side of Narrow Passage Creek, (see Patent Book P, page 115) at Richmond, a later Patent Book Q, page 5. November 25, 1774, Augustine and Catherina Coffman of Dunmore, Virginia deeded 142 acres of land to Jacob, George and Andrew Coffman, sons of Jacob Coffman deceased, part of 424 acres granted by Fairfax in 1772. In 1739, Augustine and Catherina deeded to Adolph Coffman 188 1/2 acres, part of the Stoney Creek Tract. In 1782, Augustine and Catherina Coffman of Shenandoah County, Virginia deeded to son Andrew Coffman 178 acres which is part of two surveys: 200 acres in 1763 and is part of 424 acres dated May 15, 1772 on Narrow Passage Creek and adjoing John Coffman tracts. This same year they granted son John Coffman 146 acres near Narrow Passage Creek. In 1771, Augustine Coffman and John Huddle sold a small tract of land by the Jacob Miller estate for Presbyerian Church at Woodstock, Virgina.
Augustine was married twice and to avoid difficulty, parcelled out his Shenandoah County lands to his children of his first wife after his marriage to Mary Catherine Houtz, daughter of Wendell Houtz and Anna Elizabeth Riegel. Augustine died in 1818 and Catherine in 1843.

- According to Coffman researcher Dr. Don Cooper, Augustine Coffman was NOT married twice, it was his son, Augustine Coffman, Jr., that married Catherine Houtz. This error has apparently been repeated many times and has been published in "A Genealogy and History of the Kauffman-Coffman Families" by Charles F. Kauffman and has unfortunately been copied by many researchers of this family. A Chancery Suit for Henry Coffman of Shenandoah County, son of Augustine Coffman, Sr. outlines the children of Augustine, Sr. and shows that it was Augustine Coffman, Jr. that married Mary Catherine Houtz.
