Annie May was born on 17th May 1872 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of Ann May, formerly Hutchings, and her husband William May, a publican and grocer. The 1881 census finds Annie living with her parents and siblings at 10 John Street in Plymouth with her parents and siblings, and also her maternal grandfather, Edmund Hutchings.

By 1891 Annie had left home and was working as a kitchen maid in the household of a retired coachmaker in Plymouth.

In 1895, aged 22, Annie married Thomas Gilbert Yearling, who was eighteen. They had eleven children together between 1895 and 1915, although four died young. The 1901 and 1911 censuses both find the family living in Plymouth. Thomas worked variously as a plasterer, riveter and crew member on ships belonging to the Great Western Railway.

Annie's mother Ann died in 1910, and her father William died just under three years later in 1913. Annie's son George served in the Royal Navy during the First World War.

In the early 1920s Annie's children started to marry, and she became a grandmother in 1922, aged 50.

Thomas died in 1929, aged 53. Annie outlived him by about 24 years.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Annie was living with two of her daughters at 100 Embankment Road in Plymouth. Annie lived through the war, and so saw the destruction of much of Plymouth. She died in 1953, aged 81 years old.
