Frank May was born on 27th October 1864 in Plymouth, Devon, son of Ann May, formerly Hutchings, and her husband William May, a publican. The family lived at the Portland Inn at 29 James Street. The 1871 census finds the family still living there. By 1881 the family had moved a short distance round the corner to 10 John Street. The 1881 census describes the now 16 year old Frank as an imbecile, suggesting he may have had learning difficulties or otherwise been unable to look after himself
Frank died as a young man of just 22 years old in 1886 in Plymouth.
