Elisabeth and her husband, Johann Heinrich Adolph Lammers, immigrated from Ladbergen, Germany in 1840. Census and obituary records indicate that their eldest son, Charles, was born on 3 Nov 1841 in Wheeling, then Virginia. The 2nd son, Henry John, born in Nov. 1847, and all three daughters were born in Ohio, the youngest born in 1857. Census records for 1850 and 1860 have not yet been located.

Elisabeth's first husband, Adolph (Adolf) Lammers, passed away on 16 Apr 1878. The last Will and Testament of Adolph Lammers of Patoka Twp., was written 2nd April 1878 and recorded 1st May 1878 in Dubois Co., Indiana. It names son, Charley; dau. Elizabeth wife of Frederick Wessel; dau. Maria; dau. Sophia wife of John Rothert; and son, Henry. It does not name a wife living at the time he wrote his Will. HOWEVER, when the estate was settled, there was a document that lists Elizabeth Lammers as the widow (on file in Dubois Co. Records Library).

In the 1880 Census of Patoka Twp., Dubois Co., Indiana, Elisabeth is listed in the household of their son Henry (John Henry) Lammers, listed as his mother:
Elizabeth Lammers, age 64, Mother, widowed, b. Prussia = 1816

For several years many in the family have wondered about the tombstone for Elisabeth Kaetterheinrich, frau von J.H.W. Kaetterheinrich, his 2nd wife, and several of us have longed to identify her. I feel we were delayed in coming to the point of being able to identify her because the tops of the two tombstones have been switched at some point prior to 1993 while making repairs in the cemetery. Looking at the tombstone with Elizabeth's birth and death date on the base, you will find the first name of "J.H.W." And looking at the tombstone with J.H.W.'s birth and death dates, you will find the name of Elisabeth, frau von J.H.W. on the top section of the stone. For years people identified J.H.W.'s birth date as either 1810 (per immigration records) or 1816 (per tombstone). Finding the death record for J.H.W. and his obituary with a death date of 18 Nov 1886, put us on the right track to complete the research.

The only notice we have found for her death is a brief sentence in the "St. John's News" section of the Auglaize County Democrat on 3 Sep 1885. It was likely printed as part of St. John's News because Elisabeth would have been the step-mother-in-law of Elizabeth Eisley Katterheinrich, the wife of Solomon Katterheinrich.
"Mrs. Katterheinrich funeral at New Knoxville, O last Friday." (28 Aug 1885)

As more and more records are indexed and made available online, every once in a while we are fortunate enough to find the elusive bit of information we have searched for. That is what happened in this case. A chance search of Indiana records for J.H.W. Katterheinrich returned the marriage record of 15 Oct 1883 to Elizabeth Lammers. The marriage record itself is hard to read and several names are mis-spelled. The written version of her last name looks like Tainers. A search for Tainers in the area of Dubois County was not fruitful. The other possibility was Elisabeth Lammers, the wife of Adolph Lammers. They are documented as immigrants in Gemeinde Ladbergen and Beitrage zur Westfalischen Familienforschung. Her birth year of 1816 kept drawing us back to look harder for any more evidence. We felt we were on the wrong track when we found Adolph Lammers' Will which does not mention a wife living in 1878 when he wrote it. The 1880 census record indicating she was still living, and in the home of their son, Henry, drew us back again. After emailing the Records Librarian at the Court House in Dubois County, we received an email confirmation from the kind Librarian that Adolph's wife, Elisabeth, was indeed mentioned in estate records in the settlement of his estate. A new search on FamilySearch.org John H. W. Katterheinrich returned the Marriage License record, a separate document, which clearly says Elizabeth LAMMERS. Combined with the marriage record stating their ages, and place of residence, we are convinced we have identified the correct Elizabeth as the 2nd wife of J.H.W. Katterheinrich.
