Location of the Methodist Cemetery in New Knoxville was initially chosen because it was close to the original log Methodist Church. According to the history written on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the German Methodist Episcopal Church and celebrated on October 22-24, 1943:

In the months following the founding of the congregation in 1843, a log church was built on the southwest corner of the lot where the residence of A. H. Stienecker now (1943) stands. This would be the lot on the southeast corner of the intersection of Bremen and St. Marys Streets. The address for that lot is 107 West Bremen Street. The log church was built on the north side of the present alleyway (the southwest corner of the lot).

On May 7, 1845, lot number 27 was donated to the Methodist Church by Mr. and Mrs. E. Brown for a burial ground. This lot is on the northwest corner of German and St. Marys Streets, across the street from the log church building but south of the alleyway. The history states this lot also became the location of a new frame church building erected in 1864.

That frame church building was used as the house of worship until 1890 when the Methodist congregation purchased a house of worship on the northeast corner of Main and German streets (106 South Main Street). This history states it was purchased from the Reformed Church. Other histories state that worship house was purchased from the defunct Evangelical Protestant congregation.

In 1916 the current brick structure was built across the street, much of it by the hands of the members of the Methodist congregation, at 109 South Main Street (northwest corner of Main and German Streets).
