Origin of the Name

Katterheinrich is derived from a double name: Koetter Heinrich or Kotter Henrich. Kotter refers to a small land owner of probably 15 to 30 acres. Henrich - Henry - a common name to designate one of their sons, some royally used this name in the German states; often refers to "Heine" or "Heintz" which was the home-name. Originally there was a Kotter family that had 3 sons. The sons or the family arranged that they were to receive the "Hof" acreage. Son 1 took the name of Kotter, Son 2 took the name of Kotter-Johann, Son 3 took the name of Kotter-Henrich. Originally the three sons were designated as "Kotter," "Johann," and "Henrich" -- Selma Katterheinrich

Immigration

From Auswanderungen aus dem Kreis Steinfurt, "Kotterheinrich, Joh. Heinrich Wilhelm, b. 1810 -- U.S.A. 1838; mit Frau An. Christ. Elsabein geb. Konig, b. 1814 -- U.S.A. 1838".

In the German Book, Beitrage zur Westfalischen Familienforschung: "Joh. Heinrich W. Kotterheinrich aus Ladbergen, Ackerknect b. 16 Aug 1810; m. A. Christ. Elsabein Konig b 15 Nov 1814 -- 1838"

Obituary

J.H.W. Katterhenrich died Nov 18, 1886, at New Knoxville, Ohio, aged 76 years and 4 months. Born July 1810 in Ladbergen Westphalia, Germany. Married 1837 in his native land. Emigrated in 1838 and settled in New Bremen, Ohio, then moved to New Knoxville, where he died at his residence. Lived in Auglaize County 48 years. Member of German M.E. Church since 1842. His wife died about 4 years ago. Had 9 children - 4 dead.
Obituary in the Auglaize County Democrat, November 25, 1886.

Auglaize Co. Death Record gives his age as 76 Y 5 M 8 D which calculates to 26 Jun 1810. However, the online index for the Death Record only gives his age as 76 years. J.H.W. Katterhienich; Death Date: 18 Nov 1886; Death Place: Washington, Auglaize, Ohio; Age: 76; Birth Date: 1810; Birthplace: Germany; Occupation: Farmer; Race: White; Marital Status: Widowed.

When a person visits the Methodist Cemetery and reads the tombstones for J.H.W. Kaetterheinrich and his two wives, there is cause for confusion. The monuments for J.H.W. and his second wife, Elizabeth, were repaired at some earlier year and the tops were placed on the wrong bases. Thus, the information on the base is correct information, but it is about the wrong person. This was confirmed by the death record and obituary for J.H.W. who was born 26 July 1810 and died on 18 Nov 1886, not 1885. His second wife, Elizabeth, was born in 1816, and died on 25 Aug 1885. His first wife, Elsabein Konig, is buried 3 graves to the north of J.H.W.'s grave.

New Home at New Knoxville

On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the First Methodist Church of New Knoxville, a history was written by Rev. George H. Smith, pastor in 1843. Entitled "1843-1943 One Hundredth Anniversary of the Founding of the German Methodist Episcopal Church now The First Methodist Church, New Knoxville, Ohio - Celebrated October 22-24, 1943," it outlines all that is known about the church's history (the old records until about 1899 have been lost).

"But a very few names have been preserved, and these open the doorway to all the sacred past.

"William Kruse, Sr., who with his young son William Kruse, Jr., united with the church in the early period of 1844, is represented among us by his grandson G. Wesley Kruse, now of recent blessed memory.

It was a sister of this William Kruse, Sr., who was the wife of the William Rethwilm of that early church.

William Meckstroth of the early church is represented among us by his grandson Herman Meckstroth.

W. H. Katterheinrich, the local preacher of the early years was the grandfather of three present families among us, represented by W. W. Katterheinrich, Wesley Katterheinrich and Louis Aufderhaar.

Gustave Bielefeld, a member of the church in the early years, was father of our oldest present member, Mrs. Wilhelmina Rodeheffer, and grandfather of one family represented among us by Charles Bielefeld."

Fred Katterhenry, born in New Knoxville (the son of Ernst Herbert Katterheinrich and lived in Troy, Ohio, in his adult life), was an avid genealogist. He prepared many lists and summaries of the various Katterheinrich families of New Knoxville. He also researched the Ship's Lists at the National Archives before any electronic sources were available. This is the summary he wrote for Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Katterheinrich:

"Settled 1 km E von N.K., Sec. 29, 70 Acres - S.R. 219

Kinder: Wilhelm 1838 auf der Ocean, Heinrich 1842, Maria 1846, Hermann H 1848, Adolph Solomon 1850, Frederick 1853

Occupation: Farm laborer of Ladbergen. After colonization in USA he was farm owner, Sect 29, NE 1/4, NW 1/4 and NW 1/4, NE 1/4, 70 acres

Religion: Probably some of the first members of the first New Knoxville church (Pastor Tanke) and one of the signers of the first community church beginning Dec 1841 (1st German Evangelical Reformed Church). After dispute in this community, the Methodist Church in N.K. was started and J.H.W. took his family and joined with the new Methodist community in May 1843. He was famous for his strong faith and leadership and now he was the class leader, similar to Pastor, as there was not a Pastor every Sunday in the beginning. Old books in the Methodist Church with his handwriting. Gravestone still stands in Methodist Cemetery.

Descendants: Elmer (Katterheinrich Motors), Robert (Katterheinrich Plumbing), Emil (Civil Engineer), Edna and Selma Katterheinrich, teachers - have visited Ladbergen, Martha, the wife of Rev. Arnold Meckstroth descends from Solomon."

Clarifying the Father of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Katterheinrich

There has been confusion as to the correct father of this JHW Katterheinrich, the immigrant. The following text relates to clarification of the correct father.

The birth record for Johann Hermann Adolph Kotterheinrich, attached here as the father of JHW, states:

24 Dec 1777 Born Herman Adolph Kotterheinrich to Heinr Kotterheinrich. Godparents: Herm Adolph Storck and Joh H. Wierwille.

Bill Roege (a Katterheinrich descendant who studied the Ladbergen records meticulously) includes this note: Death 8.2.56 noted in margin.

The death record states: @78y/1m/15d; hlg. Ehmann, Overbeck, widower. Leaves 3 sons & 4 daus, grown.

Research done by Hartmut Stienecker in Ladbergen (sent to Fred Katterhenry) states:
Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Kotterheinrich
Geboren: 26 . 7 . 1810 Ladbergen
Taufpaten (godparents): Johann Heinrich Ehmann (geb. Dauwe), Kolonus Hermann Wilhelm Stork

Gestorben: Ohio
Verheiratet: (md): 26 . 7 . 1837 Ladbergen su
Anna Christine Elisabeth KONIG
geb. 15 . 11 . 1814 Ladbergen

Eltern Kotterheinrich:
Vater: Hermann Adolph Kotterheinrich geb. 3 . 6 . 1784

(NOTE: Here is where the clarification is needed. In Roege's research of the Ladbergen death records, he felt this Hermann (b. 3 Jun 1784) died on 7 Sept 1795 - @11y/3m, which calculates to a birth date of 7 Jun 1784. Doris Katterhenry, another avid researcher of the Katterheinrich families from Ladbergen, also studied the microfilm of the Ladbergen Church Records many years before Bill Roege did, and she also gives a death date for this Johann Herm. Adolph (b. 3 Jun 1784) as 07 Sep 1795.

Also, it is believed by the families that the father of JHW d. 08 Feb 1856, and his wife died the same year, 15 Jan 1856.

Roege noted the actual death record for 08 Feb 1856 states "@78y/1m/15d; hlg. Ehmann, Overbeck, widower. Leaves 3 sons & 4 daus, grown." Roege reported that the year is smudged on the 8 Feb 1856 death record and it could be 71 or 78 years old.

Hartmut Stienecker may have read the age as 71, while Bill Roege and Doris Katterhenry both read it as 78.

A death date of 8 Feb 1856, at the age of 78 Y 1 M 15 D, equals a birth of 24 Dec 1777.

A death date of 8 Feb 1856, at the age of 71 Y 1 M 15 D, equals a birth of 24 Dec 1784.

Continuing on with Hartmut Stienecker's research:
Mutter: Anna Christina WIBBELER geb. 21 . 7 . 1784
Geheiratet (md): Buch verloren (book destroyed or missing)

Eltern Konig:
Vater: Hermann Heinrich KONIG, Huer und Ackersmann, geb. 27 . 11 . 1778
Mutter: Anna Kattarina Elisabeth RUTHENSCHROER, get. 11 . 5. 1780
Geheiratet: 22 . 6 . 1800

2nd Marriage

After the death of his beloved 1st wife on 2 Feb 1883, J.H.W. Katterheinrich remarried to Elsabein who died on 25 Aug 1885. The marriage record was found in Dubois Co., Indiana. Images are attached below and transcription follows:

15 Oct 1883
John H. W. Katterhenrich, Resident of New Knoxville, O., Farmer
Age at next birthday: 74 Years, b. Germany (= b. bef. Oct 1810)
Parents: Oral Katterhenrich & Anna Willer (Wibbler?)
Second marriage
and
Elizabeth Tainers / Lammers, maiden name Ketter, Resident of Dubois Co.
Age at next birthday: 68 Years, b. Germany (= b. bef. Oct 1816)
Parents: ___ Ketter & El. Beineke
Second marriage
Married at Huntingburg, IN, Oct 15, 1883, by Rev. Andrew Griesele (who was a brother to Rev. Phillip J. Graissle, a minister at the N.K. Methodist Church from 1873-1876)

A transcribed edition of Dubois Co. Marriage Index lists her last name as Hemmers / Lammers. A search for a Tainers or any variation around Dubois Co. produced no possible results. A second document, the Marriage License, clearly states Elizabeth Lammers. A search of Lammers provided us with the information to be able to identify his 2nd wife as Elizabeth Kotter Lammers, the widow of Adolph Lammers.

Marriage License for John H. W. Katterheinrich and Elizabeth Lammers
Be it remembered that on this Thirteenth day of October, 1883, the following Marriage License was issued, to-wit:
Indiana, To-wit: DuBois County, SS: To all who shall see these presents - greeting:
That any person empowered by law to solemnize marriages is hereby authorized to join together as Husband and Wife, John H. W. Katterheinrich and Elizabeth Lammers, and for so doing this shall be sufficient authority.
In Testimony Whereof, I, Peter J. Gosmann, Clerk of the DuBois Circuit Court, hereunto subscribe my name and affix the seal of said Court, at Jasper, this 13 day of October, 1883. P. J. Gosmann Clerk (By B. L. Grieve)
Be it further remembered, That on this 17 day of October, 1883, the following certificate was filed in my office, to-wit:
Indiana, To-Wit: DuBois County
This Certifies that I joined in marriage as Husband and Wife, John H. W. Katterheinrich and Elizabeth Lammers (this handwriting looks more like Hemmers) on the 15 day of October, 1883.
Rev. A. Grassle

One wonders why J.H.W. Koetterheinrich would have traveled to Dubois Co., IN, to re-marry. There were many Ladbergen immigrants who settled in Dubois Co., some were relatives of those who settled in New Knoxville, and many were old friends from Ladbergen. Additionally, the Maple Grove Methodist Church established a Camp Ground on their land, west of Huntingburg.

History of Dubois County, IN, pg. 245-246
MAPLE GROVE AND CAMP GROUND WEST OF HUNTINGBURG.
"In pioneer days camp meetings were the great religious occasions of the year. The “Shiloh Camp Ground,” near Ireland, was the leading place of worship. As such it has passed away. At present the only camp ground in Dubois county is the “Maple Grove Camp Ground,” about four miles west of Huntingburg. It is under the supervision of the Evangelical Association of North America. This denomination belongs to the so called Methodistic churches. Its principles and doctrines are similar to the Methodist church proper, only somewhat more rigid. It dates its origin back to about 1793. Jacob Albright, the founder of the church, realizing the so-called degenerate conditions of the churches at that time, began to preach the word of God in a new light. Jacob Trometer, who found his way to Dubois county in 1841, was the first ordained minister of this church. He began his labor as a missionary a few miles west of Huntingburg, preaching to the German's of that vicinity in private houses, even in log huts or barns, as there was no place of public worship. After a year and a half of hard and earnest labor he was pleased to see his ideas of religion gain favor with the people and the Lord gave him a goodly number of souls for his hire. These he received into communion with the church after they had been converted to his faith. In 1843, Revs. C. Linder and Andrew Nickolai, of the Mt. Carmel circuit, to which Huntingburg had been added, preached alternately as often as the means 'of travel permitted—to the little flock that had been gathered near Huntingburg. The latter held the first protracted meeting in the house of Mr. Gerhard Niehaus, where a number of communicants were added and the organization of a congregation completed. In the latter part of 1843, this newly founded congregation bought a tract of timber land containing forty acres about four miles west of Huntingburg on which to build a church and lay out a cemetery and camp ground. Twenty-five acres have since been sold. Work on the church was at once begun and a log structure was built. This was dedicated to God’s services by A. B. Schaefer, presiding elder, in the autumn of 1844. The cemetery and camp ground were also laid out a few years later. Services were then regularly conducted in the old log church and a large-sized congregation established. As the membership increased the church became too small. A new and larger frame building was erected in 1880, at a cost of about $1,600. This is the church now standing just south of the beautiful maple grove. Emanuel’s church at Huntingburg unites with this congregation in holding camp meetings. The history of this ground is one of interest as well as of growth. It was laid out soon after the land was purchased, and log huts to the number of about twenty-two were built, which served as temporary homes for the people camping there during the week of the meeting. These were, one by one, replaced by frame structures and others were added. The first annual camp meeting was held in 1847, when Long was the principal speaker. Meetings were held there each year until 1889, when for five or six years no meetings occurred. In 1897, interest in the camp meeting was revived and a very successful one was held. There are now many pretty frame cottages, many of them two stories high."

"A large number of people from a distance come to spend the week at this camp ground. A large three-story frame hotel has been erected to accommodate persons from distant places. It will accommodate over a hundred people. The dining hall is large enough to seat at the table eighty four persons at one time. A deep interest is felt in this meeting over the entire Louisville district. It is estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 people attend each year. Good speakers, including pastors, professors, and bishops are annually in attendance, and much good is being accomplished."
