Facts and Events
Ann Males was born on 10th September 1746 and baptised nine days later at Cottered in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Males, formerly Dearman, and her husband John Males, a yeoman farmer. Some time between 1757 (when Ann's youngest brother was born) and 1762 (when Ann's oldest sister married) the family left Cottered and moved about nine miles south-west to Codicote. In 1767, Ann had a son called Joseph baptised at Codicote. His baptism describes him as "Joseph son of Anne Mailes & reputed of Joseph Dew". Eight days later Ann married Joseph Dew at Codicote. He was a widower from Northamptonshire. It is not clear what became of him after their marriage, but by 1769 Ann was describing herself as a widow. On 9th September 1769, Ann married again. Her second husband was a tailor called William Ewington. They went on to have another eight children together between 1770 and 1789, although one died as a baby and one died aged eleven. In the mid 1770s Ann's parents left Codicote and moved to Rushden, back near Cottered. Ann's father died at Rushden in 1793 and her mother died there in 1807. Ann was listed as one of the beneficiaries of her mother's will. William died in 1811, aged 62. Ann survived him by nearly twenty years, in which time she appears to have moved from Codicote to the neighbouring parish of Welwyn. She was buried at Welwyn on 7th February 1831, aged 84. References
