As the family traveled west, they spent at least a short time in Illinois, where one child was born in 1850.

After Amy died in 1873, the family moved to Washington County, Kansas. Albert evidently did not remarry - he was living with his daughter, Olivia, and son-in-law Jasper N. Sprague there in 1886.
