In the home are Thomas Foster (stepson, 11, b. in Baxter?, Durham) and children Mary J (4, b. in Westgate, Durham) and Joseph Chatt (2, b. in Hexham).

In the 1891 census, Joseph (39, b. in Allendale, Northumberland) and Frances (42, b. in Weardale, Durham) are living in Medomsley, Durham. He is a coalminer. In the home are Thomas Foster (son[sic], 21, also a coal miner), Mary Jane (14), Elizabeth A. (8), Frances S. (6), and George W. (4). (Son Joseph is not listed - died?)

In the 1901 census, Frances (50, b. in Westgate, Durham), widowed, is living in Medomsley. In the home are Thomas Chatt [sic] (son, 31, b. in Westgate), Elizabeth A (18, b. in Leadgate), Frances S (16, b. in Medomsley), George W (14, b. in Medomsley), Esther Henrietta (6, b. in Medomsley). (Note: the ancestry.com index for the 1901 census captures this entire family as "Chall" instead of "Chatt", due to the enumerator's style of not crossing double-t's. The familysearch.org index for the same census year gets it right.)

In the 1911 census, Frances (64, b. in Westgate) is living in Medomsley with her son George William (24, b. in Medomsley), and an Esther Henrietta Mills (servant, 16, b. in Stocksfield, Northumberland).

Notes And Questions

What was Frances' maiden name? A marriage index record has her as Frances Forster when she marries Joseph, but she has a son. Was she married before? Is Forster a name from a late husband? Or was that her maiden name?

Esther Henrietta Mills is living with the Chatt family from at least age 6. In the 1901 census, she is misidentified as a Chatt daughter, but in the 1911 census she is shown as a servant. No records are found for any Esther Henrietta Chatt, but FreeBMD records conform to the birth and death of this Esther Henrietta Mills.
