Volunteering [15 June 2021]

Hi

I noticed that you volunteered to help at WeRelate, which is greatly appreciated. I'm wondering what type of work you are interested in doing. Volunteer opportunities are listed here. Some volunteer opportunities are open to anyone, while others require administrative privileges, which, as I'm sure you can appreciate, are only given to users who have been around for a while.

My main interest is in improving the quality of existing pages (which anyone can do). If you are interested in this, please let me know what time periods and/or places you are most able and willing to research. Also take a look at Data Quality Improvement for tasks - both the current task and older ones. Some of the older tasks are partially or fully completed - I haven't got around to pruning out completed tasks. If any of this interests you, please tackle it. Or, if you would rather, I can (in about a week) give you a list of pages with events before birth. Most of these are due to typos, but the occasional one is due to the conflation of 2 or more individuals.

If improving quality by adding sources is your thing, there is a lot of opportunity for that as well, but very little in the way of lists at the moment. Category:Sources Needed identifies several pages, but I suspect these are pages where some preliminary research has already been done. There are a lot of pages where no one has searched for sources, which would be easier to tackle. If this interests you, let me know and I can probably help you find some pages to work on.--DataAnalyst 18:04, 10 June 2021 (UTC) (Janet, volunteer administrator)

Just let me know what you need help with. I live in Central Florida and I can help if it is something that I can do from my computer in my spare time when I am not working. If you need to contact me my email address is tbrady32614@gmail.com. If you need to talk to me email me your phone number and I can certainly call you to discuss any issues that you may need help with.--Thoughton 00:43, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi. Here is something to start with. WeRelate doesn't allow pages for living people, but the enforcement was not rigorous in the early days of the site. There are many pages without dates, meaning WeRelate can't automatically determine if the person is living. If you could research the pages below and add dates, that would help me on my current project. These are people who may have been born within the last 110 years (the cutoff for assuming someone is living). If they were born by 1911, you only need to enter birth date (or approx. birth year). If they were born 1912 or later, you need to enter a death date as well.

Please enter sources. If you use Find A Grave, please add the Fgravemem template to the "record name" field. This template asks that you enter the memorial number and display text (I prefer the person's name), and it provides a link to the memorial. If you need help with this template, edit (without saving) this page: Person:Antoon Zwaantjes (1) and look at how the template was used. If you need help with how to enter sources and link them to the data, please let me know.

Feel free to skip any that are difficult to find (e.g., European, South Africa). Any help is appreciated. Let me know if this works for you. There are a lot more to do if you find satisfaction in this.

Events before birth.

Hi. Here is a list of pages where there is an event before birth. The most common cause is a typo in a date, and you can't always assume you know what the typo is. For example, should a birth year of 1989 be 1889 (just the century wrong) or 1899 (century and decade flipped)? Some cases might reflect the conflation of two people into one page.

Fixing this kind of data is a preliminary step before I can accurately identify situations in which generations are linked up incorrectly (e.g., child born before parents). There are over 2700 pages like this - this is just a sampling that I believe are mostly 19th century. Let me know how it goes.--DataAnalyst 00:44, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
