Next step: Review your GEDCOM [28 November 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded STEVE MILLIGAN.GED, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

You're almost done! A volunteer admin has reviewed your GEDCOM. You still have several merges to make before this will be ready for upload. If there is a reason you are not making these merges, just leave a note here; I will see it. Let me know if you have any questions. Jillaine 09:23, 13 December 2010 (EST)

Still one more step in GEDCOM import process [18 December 2010]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate. Thank you for submitting your gedcom file. This is a reminder that your file still requires some attention by you before it can be imported into the broader WeRelate collection.

Since you are new, I have reviewed your file and I see that you need to merge families -- i.e., there are existing pages on WeRelate for some of the families in your GEDCOM. Your attention to these is required before we can accept your GEDCOM.

WeRelate is different from those sites that collect multiple user GEDCOMs. WeRelate is a single, shared database with a single web page created for each person and each family. As a courtesy to other users, we request that duplicates be merged prior to importing your file.

If a person in your database already has a page in WeRelate, you must match them. We ask that you use caution and review the existing page before making changes to it. Some pages have been worked on extensively by WeRelate users. Others may have far less information than your own.

If you need help, please review the videos and tutorials (from main WeRelate.org page) and get familiar with WeRelate. Or post a question to WeRelate_talk:Support. Or contact me by clicking on my name and going to my talk page. You can also post a question right here and I will see it.

This is not helpful. I am not an idiot and have been collecting data for 30 years. I have watched the videos and matched everything I can possibly find an opportunity to do. A little direction would be more useful than what I received. I wanted to upload a larger GEDCOM this weekend and work on it but now I can't, I must wait again. Sorry I am frustrated. Thanks.--frothingham 09:46, 18 December 2010 (EST)

Hi Frothingham, I am sorry for any frustration this has caused. I am not the admin who reviewed your file, but since the file looks correctly merged to me now, I went ahead and imported it. Have a nice weekend, (volunteer admin) --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:02, 18 December 2010 (EST)

‎EABUD.GED [18 December 2010]

Hi Frothingham, in regards to your eabud gedcom, I have two items for your review:

  1. On the Family Matches tab, there is one family left to be matched, Unknown and Caroline Simonds. It appears to match an existing WR family, George Simpson and Carroline Simonds.
  2. I noticed there are a high number of families missing one spouse. Is this what you intended, or might there have been an error in the creation of your gedcom?

I've returned the file to User Review. When you are done reviewing these items, please return it to Admin Review. Also, if you could leave me a note here about these two issues, that would be great. Thanks, --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:25, 18 December 2010 (EST)

Thanks for the responses. I thought that the match was made, now I realize I have to UPDATE to agree. I am trying to take small chunks of my TMG database so not to make a mess I can't clean up. When I make a FOCUS GROUP it doesn't put entire families. I just merged this with the Whittier group I uploaded last week. Do you think I'd be better off to add a larger chunk at a time? Thanks again.--frothingham 13:48, 18 December 2010 (EST)

Uploading smaller gedcoms isn't a problem, and small chunks are easier to clean up. However, it's your focus group that is of most concern to me. If your database contains spouses for these families, but they are not being added to your gedcom, that could be problematic. Take, for example, Unknown and Mary Adelaide Simonds. The WR software only has limited information to work with to match this file, so duplicate pages may be created. Also, you will end up having to merge later on, when you eventually upload the spouse to this family.

I'm not familiar with how TMG works, but can you add spouses to your focus group? I would even suggest deleting the gedcom that is currently in the queue, and uploading another with complete family information. Let me know if you have any questions, or if you'd like me to return your file to User Review. Thanks, --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:29, 18 December 2010 (EST)

Well, go ahead and delete it. I am looking at The Master Genealogist (TMG) and it says that it includes spouses but it doesn't. I will experiment and see if I can come up with a better method of defining my upload. Thanks!--frothingham 14:58, 18 December 2010 (EST)

Lewis [20 December 2010]

Hi,

Welcome to WeRelate. The "cleanup" I am doing relates to removing names or dates that appear in all caps and typing them in normal fashion; adding text to sources from the MA Vital Records series, which by the way are already on WeRelate as a source so when I notice you have used a "my source" for an existing source I make the change from "my source" to "source" and if I see some "Alt Birth" "Alt Death" that can be combined or eliminated based on the sources on the page I have deleted the extra items. When I see text that should be in "Description" instead of "Place" I have made that change.

So really just minor changes to conform with WeRelate guidelines. --Susan Irish 17:26, 18 December 2010 (EST)

Okay, thank you. I will try to be more cognizant when I do some more. Thanks for the help and response.

I think I am setup with dates 20 DEC 2010. Should it be 20 Dec 2010? I will adjust my format to whatever your standard is. Actually I just checked and my GEDCOM has CAPS even though my database is setup the other way. May I can find a work around.

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [1 February 2012]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Simonds.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.
