Talk:Carolina Cradle Tapestry

edit the template please? [19 October 2010]

Bill, Can you please fix this template to show the Carolina Cradle image instead of this Old Chester image? And is it possible to remove the bright purple and replace it with a dark green? I cannot figure out where that purple originates! I started what I wanted to put on this page, but managed to get it on the Data page instead. I'll copy it over here after the template is fixed. Also, the category at the bottom of the page is mis-spelled and I don't find a way to edit categories.--Janiejac 22:27, 18 October 2010 (EDT)

Hi Janie

The advantage of templates is that once you've fixed them, any changes appear automtically where-ever the template has been previously placed. No need to re-insert them into individual pages. Its all automatic.

I corrected the spelling of the Catgegory. To fix something like this you have to edit the actual Template Template:Carolina Cradle Tapestry The reason the Cradle template was using the Old Chester image is simply because I hadn't gotten around to inserting the right image. What you see there now was prepared sometime ago, but apparently never made it's way into the templates. Eventually, my intent is to have a single place where individual templates for the Tapestry can be obtained, and/or constructed. In the meantime, what I've got are basically "sketches" on my user page, that I adapt to various things as they come up.

Bright purple? I don' think we're seeing the same things. perhaps the words "Carolina Cradle" across the banner? If that's the case, I'll have to do something with the specific image. I think the lettering is black but as I look at it does have a slightly purple cast to it.

Alternatively, you may be looking at the color of the lettering in the various links. Before you click the link it has a bright blue color, but afterwards its indeed a purple color. If that's what you're talking about then that's something specific to WeRelate---only Dallan can modify those colors...They are pretty much standard across the web, so I don't think he's likely to change them. If this is what you're talking about then you might want to clear your cache, as that will revert the color's of the links that have been clicked, to the "unclicked" state. Of course, they'll change back as soon as you click them. And now that you point it out, yes, I don't think I much like that purple "clicked link" color either.

Are you trying to create a template specific to Jacksons in the Carolina Cradle? Bill
No, I wasn't trying for a specific template for Jackson - at least not yet. I have some Data to put on the Carolina Cradle and was trying to learn how it was laid out and the purpose of the various page links - which you answered so well in the email.
I need to be more clear about where I'm see the bright purple - I assumed you were seeing the same thing I was seeing - it is not the 'clicked link' color nor the coloring of the lettering. It is the background color of the center col - the col containing the Welcome msg, the image and the gold area with links. So the purple shows as background color for the welcome msg and the border around the image and border around the gold area. This shows on the page for this Carolina Cradle, the Old Chester, Smokies, SWVA and Cumberland. The New River Tapestry doesn't have the purple - it has a light gray background and Old Augusta and Germanna don't use this navigation tool. I'm not sure what to call this tool - box - it is a combination of several templates; but somewhere there must be a template that calls for this purple. The light gray on New River looks good and I thought a green (maybe #008000 or #006400) would be attractive. But I like the grey too and if you want to use that on all of them, that would look consistant and not so in-your-face as the bright purple. (I have to acknowledge that my daughter teases me about my cataract eye not seeing color properly but I see this loud and clear!)
I moved a bit of info I erroneously put on the Data page over to this page. BTW, what do you call this page that is sort of an introductory page for the region? Hmmm. I see I have the Jackson Data on the wrong page. It put it on Data: CCradle, and it needs to be somehow on CCradle/Families/Data doesn't it? Because hopefully, more families will come along and need their own Data page. So my CC/Data page still needs a lot of work. To do later . . . I just wanted to get it on there to see how would would do! And I know I created a source page for this book! --Janiejac 16:36, 19 October 2010 (EDT)
Janie---now that you mention this I recall Jim mentioning this as well. When I look at the display on this page, the background area is "lightgrey" not purple. Lightgrey is what was intended, but I'm not hard over on something like that. The fact that you don't see it in New River may give a clue as to what's causing this. I'll check. Q 16:46, 19 October 2010 (EDT) Not sure why its appearing as dark purple, but I see the templates are actually using "darkgrey" instead of "lightgrey". I've changed this on Carolina Cradle Tapestry and Old Chester Tapestry. See how they look to you now. FYI the code is in the last line below:

__TOC__

This hasn't been used in the New River Tapestry, which is why you don't see the problem there. Q 17:06, 19 October 2010 (EDT) here's the way it would look using DarkGreen

One of the reasons I try to keep colors light is to allow any text to stand out. Here, the Welcome message pretty much dissappears into the background. There are things we can do to fix that, though, besides using light color backgrounds. Q 17:10, 19 October 2010 (EDT)
I like the light gray much better! It helps the info stand out better. But Old Chester box hasn't changed yet. --Janiejac 20:01, 19 October 2010 (EDT)
