There are six major male lines of descent in the Edmiston families of Southwest Virginia. Each line is headed by a "founder". (There are two other possible founder lines, those of Person:Andrew Edmiston (2) and Person:Robert Edmiston (5), but current indications are that they left no descendants.)

The relationships between these lines, as well as the known or suspected children, are shown diagrammatically in the following figure.

The following table identifies the children of the founders of each line. Spouses for these children are also shown. Dispersion is also shown through color coding (see key at bottom). Grey color coding indicates individuals where there is considerable confusion as to the children of the founder. What that means is that SOMEONE has identified the person as a child of the founder of the line but did not provide convincing evidence that they were, in fact, descended from the founder. Additional data is needed to support or refute these identifications. Where the entry for a child of a founder is NOT color coded (ie, background remains white) no information is available concerning dispersion, though there's no question about the person being a child of the founder of the line.
