This Ordnance Survey map of 1900 from A Vision of Britain through Time locates all the original rural districts established in Wiltshire in 1894. In 1934 there were a number of mergers of neighbouring districts.

Highworth Rural District was in the northeastern corner of Wiltshire with Oxfordshire and Berkshire on its northern and eastern borders. It was directly north of Ramsbury Rural District and Marlborough Rural District, and east of Cricklade and Wootton Bassett Rural District. It wrapped round three sides of the town of Swindon. Highworth Rural District existed from 1894 until 1934 when it was split between the County Borough of Swindon and the Devizes Rural District.
