Wikipedia article on the history of Acadia

Acadia was a second North American province of France which existed 1604-1713. It originally covered the area that is now the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in Canada and eventually included much of the province of New Brunswick as well. The territory was fought over between the French and the English and ended up in English hands. The French-speaking population were driven out in many directions--back to France, to Louisiana and into Quebec. The article and accompanying map in Wikipedia expands the history.
