Birth and death records did not begin in Michigan until January 1867. Neither the census of 1850 nor that of 1860 record the relationship of family members to the head of household. Census records do confirm the year and state of birth from other records.

The family plot in Oak Hill Cemetery, Owosso, Michigan, was purchased by Sara Whitmore Reynolds long after the death of her father in Burton, Genesee County, Michigan. In view of the fact that there is a marker for him on the plot in Oak Hill, we can conclude either that his body was moved here from it's original burial place or that the marker is a cenotaph. I suspect the latter is more likely.
- ↑ No death record for him exists in either Genesee County, the place of his death, or Shiawassee County, the place of his burial. Proof of the date of death is from his obituary in the Flint Daily News, the family records of Amanda Brown Whitmore and his marker in the Oak Hill Cemetery, all of which concur; place of death is from the obituary only.
