Obituary

Copy of undated & unnamed newspaper clipping in family notes...William Foster Savidge died May 16, 1915 at 6 p.m., unexpectedly of heart failure, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 26 days. He had been up town for a walk for about one half hour and came home and sat in his favorite chair when death overtook him without struggle or warning.

Mr. Savidge was born in Wyandotte [sp] Co., Ohio, Nov. 20, 1841, where he spent his younger days. He enlisted in the U.S. army from Wyandottd [sp] county on September 28, 1861, as a private of Co. D, 81st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer infantry, in which he served until the expiration of his enlistement on Sept. 26, 1864, at which time he was honorably discharged at Columbus.

He was united in marriage to Miss Emma Steltz, of Philadelphia, Pa., on Aug. 5th 1866, to which union were born five children, two of whom preceded him in death.

In 1885 he moved from Wyandotte [sp] Co., to Allen Co., on a farm where he lived with his family until 1897, when he moved to Spencerville, where he passed the remainder of his days.

Mr. Savidge was respected and loved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his demise, his loving wife, two daughters, Mrs. Carl Kimpel, of St. Marys, and Mrs. Harry Briggs, of Spencerville, and one son Laurence [Samuel L.] Savidge of Spencerville.

He was converted in a revival meeting near Spencerville, conducted by the United Brethren people, but later united with the Olive Chapel M. E. church, and then when coming to Spencerville he became a member of Trinity M. E. church. So he has been identified faithfully with the church for a number of years.

He was also a faithful member of the G.A.R. and of the K. of P. lodges.

He has gone where there are: No aching hearts are there, No tear-dimmed eye, no form by sickness wasted, No cheek grown pale through penury of care, No spirit cherished beneath the woes they bear, No sighs for bliss untasted.
