William Rowe was born around 1823 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, son of a lacemaker named Susannah Rowe, formerly Perry, and her husband Samuel Rowe, an ironmonger's labourer. No birth or baptism record has yet been found for him. The 1841 census finds William living with his parents at Parrotts Piece in Leighton Buzzard.
In 1844, William married Hannah Meakins. They went on to have eleven children together between 1845 and 1869. William's father died in 1857, and his mother in 1864. Each census from 1851 to 1881 finds William, Hannah and their children living in Leighton Buzzard. William worked variously as a wharf labourer (presumably on the Grand Union Canal which passes through the town), agricultural labourer and bricklayer's labourer. Hannah worked as a charwoman and laundress.
Hannah died in 1886. The 1891 census finds William living alone in a two roomed house at Lake Street and working as a gardener. By 1901 he was living with his daughter Lizzie and her family.
William died on 26th May 1906 in Leighton Buzzard, where he appears to have lived his whole life. He was said to be 82 years old.
