Biography

"After his marriage he lived a few years on a farm in Salem twp., Columbiana county, near Hearts Church. Later he bought a farm of 100 acres near the west line of same county, in Knox township, for which he paid $410. A log cabin had been built, in what was called a "slash" of a few acres. (The timber being cut down, but not cleared off.) There was no established road nearer than 3 miles, and the way through the timber was found by means of "blazed" trees. He brought his family, and began the work of making a home, by clearing off the heavy timber, preparatory to the harvest to be gathered later. In later years 35 acres more were added to the home. This continued to be his home to the end of his life. He was permitted to live with his wedded companion, who was a 'help meet" in deed and truth a little over 58 years. She surviving him only a few months. The last years of his life brought him considerable bodily affliction, induced, doubltess, by the hard labor and exposure, incident to the home building. He was a devoted husband and a kind and loving father. No sacrifice was too great for him to make for his children. He especially desired that they should enjoy and improve the priviledges of education, the lack of which he so keenly felt. He was for many years a loyal and official member of the Lutheran Church. He was priviledged to see nearly all of his children come into the same church fold, as they reached mature years. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand to the needy. He was a law abiding, order loving and loyal citizen."S6
