- ↑ enlisted in Co G, 179th Regt. O.V.I. at the age of 27. Promoted to FullCorporal on 27 September 1864. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 27 May 1865.Mustered out Company G, 179th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 17 June 1865.One Hundred and Seventy-ninth Infantry. - Col., Harley H. Sage;Lieut.-Col., Peter Grubb; Maj., Emanuel T. Hooker. This regiment wasorganized at Camp Chase in Sept., 1864, to serve for one year. It movedto Nashville, Tenn., arriving on Oct. 8, and was placed on duty at thatpost. It was assigned to the 2nd brigade, 4th division, 20th corps, andwas present at the battle of Nashville. The regiment remained on duty atNashville until June 17, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordancewith orders from the war department.

- ↑ Excerpt from Powell family history book, "In addition to the publicschools, he had the advantage of several terms at Mt. Union college,extending through four years. Taught in the public schools a numberwinters. Located on his father's farm after marriage. August 23 1864enlisted in Co G, 179th Regt. O.V.I. and served with his regiment untilmustered out by reason of close of war, June 23, 1865. His regiment wason provost and guard duty in and around Nashville, TN during the wholetime of service. After his return home, located on a rented farm nearHanover, where he remained eighteen years. In 1883 he bought and movedon a farm of eighty acres near Damascus, OH. In 1900 moved to thevillage of Damascus, which is now his home. He came to his majority inthe height of the Anti-Slavery agitation. As a result, he was anenthusiastic supporter of the Republican party. Of later years he hasgiven his support largely to the cause of Prohibition.
He embraced religion when a student at Mt. Union and united with thechurch of his parents. His first wife was raised and continued a memberof the Friends' Society until a few years before leaving Hanover, whenall the family cast their lot with the Methodists, among whom he hasheld an official relation much of the time. The second wife, who wasalso a Friend, joined the Methodists. Both wives had been students ofMt. Union college and taught in the public schools."
