- ↑ Excerpt from Powell family history "When a young man he learned thecarpenter trade at which he worked until drafted for 9 months into theUS service in 1862. With others drafted at the time, he was assigned toCo. G 16th Regt. O.V.I. and was with Grant's Army at time of firstattack on Vicksburg, Miss. Before any further engagement, he was on thesick list. After the army moved down the river, he with other sick oneswas put on board a transport and started north. But died before landing,near Benton Barracks, MO. He was devotedly attached to his family andafter he became ill, was very much discouraged and quite homesick, whichdoubtless worked against his recovery. He was an active and consistentmember of the Evangelical Church at Marshalville, Wayne county, OH Wherehe lived. All of his political life was with the Republican party. Hiswidow survived him 29 years."
