"Thomas Powell, Sr., was a native of the state of Maryland, where he was born in the year following that memorable one in which was signed the Declaration of Independence, and thus his childish couch was watched and guarded in the midst of alarms and the stern conflict of grim-visage war. He was reared and educated in his native state, and there learned the blacksmith trade, but the vocation did not suit him and he there turned his attention to farming. He was married in Maryland and there five of his children were born. In the year 1811 he emigrated to Ohio, which was at that time considered as being on the veritable frontier of civilization, and he located on a tract of land near New Lisbon, Columbiana county, securing the same on an improvement lease, which involved the clearing of the land and placing it under cultivation. There he continued to reside until 1830, when he came with his family to Stark county and located on the southeast quarter of section 13, Washington township, the property being owned by his older sister, Elizabeth Hahn. He took a life lease of the property, and here continued to make his home until his death, which occurred on the 1st of October, 1846, prior to which time he had effected the reclamation of a considerable portion of the farm.. He was a Democrat in his political proclivities, but had no ambition for public office of any sort. He was in his early life a member of what was commonly designated as the old "blue stocking" Lutheran church, but shortly prior to his demise he became a member of the Freewill Baptist church, with which his wife also was identified. She was born in Maryland in 1782, and her death occurred in 1863 at the venerable age of eighty-one years."S2
"Thomas headed for Ohio with eight dollars and fifty cents in money, and an old horse as the only conveyance for wife and five children and all of his belongings, landing near Lisbon, Columbiana county, OH on the 15th of the month (April 1811). They lodged at taverns or public houses at night. Crossed streams and rivers (which were then high) by fording and ferries. Remarkable as it may seem to us, the money held out until they reached their destination. They remained near Lisbon until about 1830 when his sister Elizabeth, who had married a man by name of Hahn and had also come to Columbiana county from Maryland, Being left a widow without children, though with some means, gave her brother Thomas money to enter a hundred acres of land in Washington Township, Stark county, Oh. He and his wife to have the use of the same during life. Afterwardit was to go to the heirs of his daughter, Elizabeth, for whom she was God-Mother. Upon this land he moved with what family remained with him, and began the work of improvement. His sister moving and living with the family for some time. But later had a log house built near by, in which she lived alone until her death. Some years after the father's death his sons Samuel, Levi and Thomas, bought the heirs interest in the farm, which they divided. Thomas getting the north half. After this the mother made her home with her sons Samuel and Levi. She survived her husband 17years. They were members of the Lutheran church until the organization of a society of the Free-Will Baptists in the neighborhood, with which they united."S3
