William died prior to civil registration in Scotland and any family notes for the cause of death have not been found. John and Mary Palmer lost three children in 1849. There had been no infant deaths in the family until that year.

One possibility is the closeness of the Irish Potato Famine, both in time and in distance. Bute is an island off the west coast of Scotland and the blight that caused the potato harvests to fail in Ireland is known to have crossed the Irish Sea.
