A description of the ship Garth Castle was found online. She was a mail steamer for the Cape [of Good Hope] Mail Service until 1890.

  5. John Palmer was a mariner, or seaman, in the merchant marine. The last evidence of his being alive was a letter written by him dated 31 July 1881 to the solicitor looking after his father's estate in which he stated that he was not willing to be an executor.
    His son, John, my grandfather, told me that he was still at school when his father died. (Young John was 8 years old in 1881.)
    It is assumed he went back to sea and lost his life during a voyage. Deaths at sea and deaths reported to British authorities abroad and available to the general public have been checked. All came up negative.

    The above was written in 2013 outlining research started in 1980.

    Today, 29 Apr 2023, I checked the United Kingdom Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths at Sea, 1844-1890 (BT 158), now available online through Ancestry and found John Palmer. He died of phthisis (tuberculosis) while on board the MS Garth Castle in August 1882. His wife had died from phthisis in September 1880.
