William Meakins was born on 3rd May 1764 and baptised five months later at Woburn in Bedfordshire. He was the son of Ann Meakins, formerly Wilson, and her husband John Meakins.
On 4th May 1788, aged 24, William married Mary Sinfield at Woburn. They went on to have a daughter called Sarah in 1789 and a son called Thomas in 1798. William’s mother died in June 1793.
Mary died in September 1799. Her burial record does not give her age, but William was 35 when she died.
Eleven years later, William remarried. His second wife was Susannah Hawkins, and they married on 30th December 1810 at Woburn, although William’s address at the time of their marriage was given as Shenley in Buckinghamshire, about nine miles west of Woburn. William and Susannah had one son, William, baptised at Woburn in 1814.
It has yet to be established when Susannah died. William's father died in July 1818.
The 1841 census finds William living with his son William at Sheep Lane in Potsgrove, a couple of miles south of Woburn. Both were described as agricultural labourers. They were still living at Sheep Lane together in 1851, by which time the younger William had married and had children. By this time the older William was described as being a pauper and former agricultural labourer.
William’s son William died later in 1851, aged 37.
William died in 1853, aged 88. He was buried at Potsgrove on 2nd March 1853.
