John Meakins’ origins have yet to be established. The age given when he died suggests that he was born around 1738. His first confirmed sighting is on 8th September 1760, when he married Ann Wilson at Dunstable in Bedfordshire. At the time of their marriage John was living at Woburn, about nine miles north of Dunstable. John and Ann settled in Woburn, having nine children baptised there between 1761 and 1780, although two died young.

Ann died in 1793. John survived her by 25 years. He was buried at Woburn on 9th July 1818, when he was said to be eighty years old.
