William Cowand of Bertie NC by John Wesley Cowand, 2006

Overview

William Cowand (d. 1768, lived in Bertie County, NC

The following is largely based on Cowand, 2006. The child list is based on Ancestry Tree for Cowan/Short/Middaugh/Richards family which provides a copy of most of Cowand 2006.

The first confirmed records for William Cowand appears in Bertie County NC in 1757, and a 1758 tax record in the form of tax lists. He was probably present in the area as early as 1727 when a deed to WIlliam Cowan/Cowin was registered. He is commonly identified as marrying Maybee Cake, daughter of John Cake, though the basis for this is unknown. William is believed to have died in 1768 and Maybee in 1785. William and Maybee had a number of children. An 1858 letter from descendant Joseph D. Cowand to his kinsman Jessee Cowan, identifies the sons of William and Maybee. His children are commonly given as:^[3]:

The mother of the above children is identified as second wife "Anon Mizelle". No source is provided, Since no source is provided for these children, their identity as children of William is questionable.

1. ↑ Ancestry.com September 28 2013 includes 78 distinct trees for William Cowand=Maybe Cake. Of these two give a DOD of 1768, and the rest use 1780, or give no date. The POD is less commonly given, and includes a mixture of places, including Oswego New York, Bertie NC, and Charleston SC. The 1768 DOD appears to be based on an "insolvents" tax list of that year in Bertie NC, with an entry for "William Cowand, dead, poor". This may be a record for the William Cowand who married Maybe Cake, but it might also be for a different William Cowand. See: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/bertie/census/1768insol.txt
2. ↑ Ancestry.com September 28 2013 includes 78 distinct trees for William Cowand=Maybe Cake. DOB's range from 1723 to 1748, with 1748 by far the most common. This DOB conflicts badly with the most common DOM (1758] for this couple. If the DOM is even approximately correct, William must have been born much earlier than 1748, though few genealogists accept this (apparently). A nominal DOB of c1725 is shown though a range of 1723 to 1727 is given in the Ancestry trees showing DOB's earlier than c1748.
