William Bowden was baptised on 14th June 1868 at Cadeleigh in Devon, son of Emma Bowden, formerly May, and her husband William Bowden, a dairyman. The family did not stay long in Cadeleigh. William's brother John was born in 1870 at Cruwys Morchard, and by the time of the 1871 census the family had moved again to Puddington. Through the 1870s the family lived for a time in Tiverton before returning to Cruwys Morchard before the 1881 census, when William was described as a scholar.

By 1891 William had left home and was working as an agricultural labourer, living at South Yeo Cottage in the parish of Poughill.

On 2nd August 1900, William was married to Matilda Snell at Holy Trinity Church in Exeter. They settled in Newton St Cyres, where they were living in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. They do not appear to have had any children.

William appears to have died in 1941, aged about 73. Matilda survived him by four years.
