Caroline Bowden was baptised on 21st July 1878 at Bickleigh near Tiverton in Devon, daughter of Emma Bowden, formerly May, and her husband William Bowden, a dairyman. Caroline appears in the 1881 census living with her parents and siblings at Lower Lugsland in the parish of Cruwys Morchard.

By 1891 Caroline was not living with her family but in a "Girls' Industrial Home" in Plymouth, where she was training for domestic service. She has yet to be researched after 1891.
