William Bowden was baptised on 8th January 1843 at Tiverton in Devon, son of Sarah Bowden, formerly May, and her husband William Bowden, an agricultural labourer. William was the eldest of the couple's four children, although his youngest sibling (and only sister) died when only one year old, making William effectively the eldest of three boys. The 1851 census finds William living with his parents, brothers and maternal grandmother at Pantacridge in the parish of Loxbeare.
In 1859, when William was sixteen years old, his father died. Less than two years later his mother married again, with a labourer named William Tucker becoming William's stepfather. The 1861 census finds William having left home and working as a agricultural labourer at a farm in Tiverton.
In 1868 William married his cousin, Emma May, at Tiverton. William's mother and Emma's father were sister and brother. William and Emma moved around the mid Devon area throughout their lives, and briefly over the border into Somerset. William worked as a dairyman. They had nine children together, but by the time of the 1911 census only five were still living.
Emma died in 1924. William survived her by two years and died in 1926, aged 83.
