Jefferson Township Common School graduates, 1913. Ervin DeCamp, Anna Hardendorf, Hester Hayes, Fern Kimmell, Fern Mahnesmith, Erma Martin, Mildred Rauh, Walter Schauweker, Zena Williams. Presentation of diplomas at Examination Room in the Court House 9:30 to 10:00, June 5, 1913 at Albion, Indiana. Music by Avilla High School Band.
Walter worked with, and sold woodstoves to, Amish communities around Northern Indiana during the Great Depression. Demand did not shift to gas and electricity with the general public and their on-hand money supply was not affected by bank runs. This strategy enabled him to pay $5,000 cash ($80,000, adjusted) for a new home and property in Avilla on which he built, and later sold, several homes during and after the height of the Depression in the early-to-mid 1930s.
Andrew Jackson signed the original deed to his 40 acre farm tract.
My father has many fond memories of him.
Walter's grave was visited and documented in May, 2011.
